Veteran actor, Dharmendra, the ‘He Man’ of Bollywood, has been discharged from Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital. His fans can breathe a sigh of relief amid fake death hoax reports of the actor. Dharmendra’s fame is not unknown to the world, and in the past, he spoke about never having received the Best Actor award. Do you know, Dharmendra once shared of how he used to stitch suits in anticipation of getting an award but he never received.
Dharmendra, while receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, revealed of stitching suits for 37 years to get recognition
Dharmendra comes from an era where he was called as the ‘He-Man’ of Bollywood and took the limelight for his comedy and romantic movies. When late actor, Dilip Kumar and his wife, Saira Banu, had given Dharmendra the Lifetime Achievement Award back in 1997 during the 42nd Filmfare Awards, Dharmendra made an interesting revelation. He shared of stitching suits yearly in anticipation of an award and revealed:
“37 saal hoh gaye. Mei har saal suit silwata tha, matching tie dhundta tha ki shayad mujhe yeh award mil jaye. Lekin nai mila. Kabhi nai mila. Maine 60’s mei Phool aur Patthar, Satyakam, Anupama ki, bahut saare golden jubliee hui lekin mujhe award nai mila.”

Dharmendra shared of reaching a point where he stopped stitching suits
Dharmendra used to stitch a new suit, and also find ties that matched in the hope of getting an award. However, there came a point when the actor stopped stitching suits. He shared that he was fine with even collecting an award in a t-shirt, jeans, and underpants, because he was done waiting for his recognition to come. In his words:
“Maine socha shirt pehno. Bula lenge toh aise hi jaunga nai tioh kachei ke saath chala jaunga. Phir bhi mujhe award nai mila toh socha kya karu yaar. Aaj 37 saal ke baad yeh trophy mili hai mujhe. Lekin ess trophy mei mei 15 saalo ki trophy dekh raha hu joh mujhe milni chahiye thi.”

Well, not many know that it was back in the 1960s when Dharmendra had signed for the movie, Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, where the actor played the lead role. He had debuted as a hero for a mere salary of Rs. 51, according to a report by the Screen. He had done more than 300 movies that had hits such as Phool Aur Patthar, Sholay, Pratigya, Satyakam, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, and Chupke Chupke. Dharmendra had got just one Filmfare back in his career under the category of Best Talent and got the Lifetime Achievement Award like much later.

When Dharmendra spoke about why he did not receive an award
Dharmendra, earlier in varied interviews, had emphasised the fact that public recognition was the ultimate achievement for any star. In an interview with PTI, when he was asked why he did not get any award, the actor shared that considering love from people to be much better than the trophies piling on dust and lying on some shelf. “Generally, receiving lifetime achievement awards means ‘retirement’. But I won’t sit back. I don’t want to comment on why I did not get an award. But I think I deserved it for Phool aur Patthar, Satyakam, Chupke Chupke, Pratigya, Sholay and Naya Zamana among several others.”
