Popular actress Keerthy Suresh, who won acclaim with Mahanati, is gearing up for the release of her upcoming Hindi film Raftaar alongside Rajkummar Rao, which is scheduled to release in October. Although her earlier Hindi outing Baby John failed to create the expected impact, industry observers believe Bollywood still remains an attractive destination for many South Indian actresses.
Writer-turned-producer Kona Venkat says there is nothing wrong with actresses aspiring to enter Hindi cinema. “Bollywood has always remained special for Telugu and Tamil actresses. Most South actresses nurture Bollywood dreams, and there is nothing wrong about it,” he says.
He points to actresses like Rashmika Mandanna, who expanded her presence through films like Animal and Chhaava, while Samantha earned appreciation with projects such as Family Man 2 and Citadel: Honey Bunny. Raashi Khanna too gained recognition through Hindi projects like Farzi and Yodha.
At the same time, Kona notes that success in Bollywood is not guaranteed for everyone. Despite establishing herself strongly in Telugu cinema, Sai Pallavi is still waiting for a major breakthrough in Hindi cinema. “Hits and flops are part of an actor’s career. They have to trust their talent and wait for the right opportunity. Sai Pallavi has a huge film like Ramayana, where she plays Goddess Sita, and that could turn out to be a massive blockbuster,” he adds.
Kona believes the move towards Hindi cinema is also driven by the desire to expand market reach and connect with wider audiences. “Hindi cinema still enjoys broader visibility and reaches international markets including Europe and African countries. That is why actresses are keen on expanding their fan base through Bollywood films,” he explains.
He further says that Bollywood success also opens doors to lucrative endorsement opportunities. “Rashmika is already endorsing leading brands and earning huge sums. Keerthy Suresh, Samantha and Sai Pallavi could also become major brand ambassadors and earn crores through endorsements. So Bollywood dreams are not only about films but also about bigger commercial opportunities,” he says.
Kona Venkat also points out that the exchange between industries is becoming stronger than ever. With Bollywood actresses like Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Janhvi Kapoor taking up Telugu and Tamil projects, he believes Indian cinema is entering a true crossover phase.
“Language and regional barriers are gradually disappearing. Cinema today is becoming one unified identity,” he concludes.
