The BBQs are out, people are flocking to rivers, the terraces are packed – summer has arrived early in Germany, with some parts of the country already experiencing temperatures of over 30C this Pentecost weekend. But how much warmer will it get this week?
Temperatures are expected to range between around 27 to 34 degrees Celsius on Monday, according to experts on Sunday.
“It’s a bit cooler on the coasts, at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. It’s glorious midsummer weather everywhere,” meteorologist Dominik Jung told the Bild tabloid.
In weather terms, summer doesn’t technically begin until 1st June.

Tuesday peak
The heatwave is expected to peak on Tuesday when temperatures could “even reach 35C in some places,” climatologist Karsten Brandt told the paper, explaining that the air temperature could feel more like 40C.
Brandt said it could be 33C Celsius along the Moselle River or in Bonn and around 34C in Mannheim or Karlsruhe.
The German Weather Service DWD said southwestern Germany would see the hottest temperatures, possibly climbing to 35C, although it has not issued a heat warning.
“This isn’t enough for a heat warning yet,” DWD meteorologist Lars Kirchhübel told Tageschau.

“The nights, in particular, are still cool and provide sufficient relief,” he said, adding that buildings had also not yet heated up significantly.
However, he still advised that people apply sunscreen and seek shade, especially during the midday heat, with anyone unwell or vulnerable advised to take particular care.
There’s good news ahead for anyone who’s finding the hot weather a bit too much, though: temperatures should drop off slightly on Wednesday.
Temperatures are forecast to be around 19C in Hamburg, 21C in Dortmund and Leipzig and 28C in Munich on Wednesday.
