BHUBANESWAR: A centuries-old tribal ritual symbolising spiritual rebirth and return to ancestral faith drew attention in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Sunday, as members of a Santhal family underwent a traditional reconversion ceremony steeped in indigenous customs and community participation.
The unique ritual was performed at Dungurudiha village under Khunta block in Udala area, where the family of Lembu Hansda formally returned to their traditional faith after reportedly following another religion for nearly five years.
According to local sources, the Santhal community observes the ritual as a symbolic “new birth” for families rejoining their ancestral belief system. As part of the ceremony, villagers dug a pit inside the family’s house. The family members then crawled out of the pit, symbolising rebirth and their spiritual return to the community.
The act is traditionally believed to represent severing ties with the past and reconnecting with ancestral roots and customs. Villagers and elders supervised the ritual with reverence.
“We had moved away because of illness and personal difficulties. Now that everything has improved, we decided to return to Sanatan Dharma and our ancestral traditions,” said Lembu Hansda after the ceremony.
Following the symbolic emergence from the pit, traditional purification rituals were performed and sacred substances were sprinkled on the family members as part of the reconversion process.
The event concluded with a community feast attended by villagers and relatives, celebrating the family’s return and reaffirming social bonds within the tribal community.
Local observers said such rituals continue to hold deep cultural importance among indigenous communities in Odisha, where faith, identity and social belonging remain closely interconnected.
The ceremony also reflected how tribal communities preserve centuries-old customs and oral traditions despite rapid social and religious changes in rural India.
In several tribal regions of Odisha, rituals associated with birth, death, faith and nature continue to play a central role in maintaining cultural continuity and community cohesion across generations.
