MUMBAI: Police have deployed security near the Sambhaji Nagar residence of ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke following the outfit’s rapid rise on social media, officials said. According to the police, protection has been enhanced to prevent crowding outside Dipke’s residence after CJP’s sensational online success.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Pankaj Atulkar said there was no specific threat perception behind the decision to provide round-the-clock security at Dipke’s residence. “We have provided general police protection at Dipke’s residence in the MIDC Waluj area. This is to ensure there is no crowding at his place since the CJP issue is currently trending on social media,” he said.

Mr. Atulkar clarified that the move was not prompted by any specific security threat and added that no formal complaints had been received at any police station under his jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, State Congress leaders Nana Patole and Balasaheb Thorat alleged that the government was attempting to suppress public anger instead of addressing issues affecting the youth, the poor and the unemployed.

Dipke on Saturday alleged a sweeping crackdown on the digital movement, claiming that all of CJP’s social media accounts and its website had either been taken down or compromised, leaving the group without access to any of its official platforms.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Patole claimed that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) had warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi that CJP’s rapidly expanding social media campaign could trigger unrest in the country, following which the content was blocked.

Mr. Thorat said the BJP could not escape criticism by targeting social media platforms or accounts.

“There has been growing anger over this issue for many days. If this continues, it will affect the youth, the poor and the unemployed,” he said.

Dipke, a student at Boston University and a former member of the Aam Aadmi Party, launched the CJP social media handle last week after controversy erupted over remarks reportedly made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who allegedly referred to “cockroaches” and “parasites” during a court hearing related to the ‘senior’ designation of a lawyer.

Within a week, the outfit’s Instagram account had reportedly attracted more than 19 million followers.
