The Colombian hitmaker opened up about how deeply she was affected by the breakdown of her relationship with Gerard Piqué, and shared how she feels about the former footballer now
Shakira has opened up about how heart breaking her split from Gerard Piqué was, describing the breakdown of their relationship as the “darkest moment” of her life.
The Hips Don’t Lie singer, 49, has largely kept quiet about the details of her separation since she announced the end of her 11-year relationship with the former Barcelona footballer in 2022. The pair share two sons together, Milan, 13, and Sasha, 11.
However, Shakira has now spoken out about the devastating moment her tight-knit family unit fell apart, which happened while her father, William Mebarak, was in the hospital and seriously ill after a severe fall.
She told The Times : “[I was living through] the darkest moment – when I saw the dissolution of my family. The family that I had dreamt to keep forever.”
Although her statement emphasises how terrible this time period was for her, the Colombian superstar believes the experience ultimately made her stronger.
She added: “I’ve been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps in an unforeseen way a wiser person – or stronger, at least…It’s amazing to learn that humans have a resilience that we can resort to at any moment in our lives.”
Although the singer feels she has grown through the experience, she was adamant that at this moment in time, there is no space in her life for romance. She made it clear that she is prioritising her children, career, and time spent alone over dating.
She told The Times newspaper: “No romance for me for now. There’s no space or time in my life for that. My plate is quite full.
“My kids are my priority. And my career. Strangely enough, I’m in love with my career like I’ve never been in my life. I’m enjoying my time alone as well.”
Shakira and Gerard first met in 2010 while filming the music video for Waka Waka, which was the official song of that year’s FIFA World Cup. They went on to become one of the entertainment and sporting world’s most high-profile couples before confirming their separation in June 2022.
At the time, rumours circulated that the former footballer had been unfaithful, although Gerard has denied these allegations. Shakira added fuel to the fire by hinting at this to People en Español, saying: “Everything happened at once, my home was falling apart. I was finding out through the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU.”
Sources close to Gerard claimed that he was unaware they were splitting up until Shakira made a public statement on Instagram, saying: “We regret to confirm that we are parting ways. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
Gerard quickly moved on with 24-year-old public relations student Clara Chia Marti after the split. Sources close to the couple also at the time also made allegations that Gerard and Shakira were in an open relationship for three years before breaking up.
Despite everything that happened between them, during her interview with The Times Shakira also insisted she still feels gratitude towards Gerard for the family they built together.
