HYDERABAD: The summer camp conducted by the Vivekananda Institute of Human Excellence for students of Classes IV to X concluded with cultural celebrations at the Vivekananda Auditorium in Ramakrishna Math on Sunday. Children presented dances, skits and karate demonstrations, while messages on human values were highlighted during the programme. The camp aimed at nurturing Bharatiya Samskruti, discipline, character building, personality development and human excellence, inspired by Swami Vivekananda.
Swami Bodhamayanandaji said the camp was held in phases over 45 days for different age groups, including junior college students. “It was 45 days of recharging, recycling and purifying the minds of students. One of the biggest problems in today’s education system is that recycling of the mind is being forgotten. Education has become focused only on buildings and careers. Nobody asks children what kind of person they want to be; instead, everyone asks what they will become,” he said.
He noted that while incomes were rising, moral values were declining. “The first day of camp was difficult, the second day was dull, but by the third day children began changing positively,” he said, announcing a new Sunday programme from July 12 to continue promoting human values.
Police commissioner V C Sajjanar, chief guest, said such programmes were important for children and parents. “My own children attended these courses and the language teachings were very useful. Parents today say children shut doors if they refuse their wishes, but we must learn to say no and explain things patiently,” he said.
Quoting Swami Vivekananda, Sajjanar urged children not to idolise random social media influencers. “There are no greater heroes than our parents. I also spend time with government school students and observe that many lack basic life skills. Parents should teach children walking, yoga, humility, sympathy and compassion instead of allowing ego to dominate,” he added.
