The search for Nancy Guthrie has crossed its 112th day, since the 84-year-old mysteriously vanished from her Arizona home. Nancy, the mother of Today show’s Savannah Guthrie, was last seen on the night of January 31, 2026, when she was reportedly dropped off by her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni. The next morning, she was nowhere to be found and was reported missing at the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Over the last 100+ days, fresh theories surrounding the case have reignited public speculation online. Now, former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer has shared four possible explanations behind the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother. Coffindaffer, who has been closely following the case on social media, said the evidence appears consistent with “a kidnapping for ransom plot gone south,” while also suggesting that Nancy Guthrie is likely dead.
Former FBI agent raises four possible scenarios surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance

On May 23, 2026, Coffindaffer shared a detailed account of all the possibilities surrounding the octogenarian’s disappearance, outlining what she believes are the four most plausible theories based on similarities with past kidnapping investigations.

In a lengthy X post, the ex-FBI agent first hinted at what she described as a “wrench attack”. This is where organised criminals allegedly target wealthy individuals using publicly available information. Nancy would have been an easy target, given Savannah’s fame and wealth, along with photos and videos of the family available online. Coffindafer wrote:
“With a plethora of photos of Nancy, her home, even her bedroom, Nancy was a ripe target for an easy abduction. And the closeness of Savannah & Annie to Nancy made the prospect of getting paid a likely prospect in the group’s mind.”

One of her most explosive theories was that the “porch guy”, who was seen on Nancy’s doorbell camera footage, may have already killed her. Coffindafer wrote, “The problem was Nancy died at Porch Guy’s hands.” Citing the multiple ransom demands sent to the Guthries, where the unknown senders demanded crypto payment in return for information, Coffindafer claimed these actions hint at “Wrench plots”, mentioning that “over 2 billion in crypto has been paid for ransom from 2023-2025. It’s big business.”

Did a family member, or someone close to the family, plan it?
Another theory involves the possibility that someone connected to the family orchestrated the crime. This is one of the most popular theories surrounding Nancy’s disappearance, with criminal psychologist Gary Brucato also previously noting the involvement of “somebody who is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

While Coffindafer acknowledged that investigators have reportedly cleared Nancy Guthrie’s immediate family members, she noted that many online observers continue to speculate about whether a more distant relative or insider could be involved. Noting that she personally was not strongly leaning toward that explanation, she wrote, “I am not barking up this tree, but present it as many people believe this.”
Coffindaffer’s third scenario suggests the possibility that someone familiar with the family or property could have carefully planned the kidnapping. She cited some popular abduction cases from the past, proposing that a handyman or “family friend” may have known Nancy’s routines and vulnerability well enough to carry out the crime methodically. She also pointed out similarities in the timing of ransom demands, noting that in Nancy’s case, the demands reportedly came within roughly 24 hours of her disappearance. She wrote:
“Remember the case of Heddy Braun. A ransom demand was not even made in that case until 2 days later (Nancy’s case 1 day). $3 million demanded. (Nancy’s case $6 million). Braun miraculously survived the abduction & was rescued about 4 days later. She was found shackled in subzero temperatures in a trailer.”
Could Nancy Guthrie’s abduction be part of a revenge plot?

The possibility of a revenge plot is one of the most popular theories that has gained traction online. Many online investigators and locals in Nancy’s neighbourhood believe that her abduction was a revenge-driven attack designed specifically to emotionally destroy the Guthrie family. Coffindafer believes that if it indeed is the case, the goal may not have been solely financial. She wrote:
“Someone angry at Nancy/a Guthrie family member perpetrated this crime to cause absolute misery to this family. That means, the torture of abducting Nancy with 0 regard for her life. They wanted to strip of the family of money (thus ransom demand), cause severe emotional distress, and inflict damage on their reputations by publicly going forth with the demands knowing the ransom demand would not be paid causing much public scrutiny (which has happened).”

Regarding the popular allegations of Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni‘s supposed involvement in Nancy’s disappearance, Coffindafer says it could also be the perpetrator’s ploy to frame the couple. The perp may have intentionally created public suspicion around family members by abducting Nancy shortly after a family gathering and ensuring certain relatives appeared connected to the timeline. She wrote:
“They also set up the kidnap to frame, in a sense, Tomasso & Annie’s by choosing to kidnap her after a family dinner and with Tomasso last to see her hoping the public would make the leap to blame them. This would be someone completely obsessed with torturing the Guthrie family; Someone who would risk it all to murder their matriarch.”
The theory has triggered intense debate online, especially among followers closely tracking every development in the still-unsolved case.

Where the investigation stands now
Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson-area home in February 2026. Investigators later revealed that blood matching Nancy’s had been discovered at the property, while her doorbell camera had reportedly been disconnected before she vanished. Despite months of investigation, authorities have not identified any suspects publicly.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos recently stated that investigators are getting closer to identifying unknown DNA found at the scene, while pushing back against claims that the case has gone cold. Meanwhile, in Nancy’s neighbourhood in the Catalina Foothills area, residents and supporters continue to put yellow ribbons and messages of hope, waiting for answers.
