Greg James was behind the scenes at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Sunderland and shared a tour of the dressing rooms, with one fan calling out an ‘awkward’ moment
Greg James’ behind-the-scenes tour of BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend is always a hit with fans. And this year was no different.
However, there was one awkward moment that was spotted by fans – and it wasn’t the presenter climbing into a bin. Greg, wearing a Sunderland AFC football shirt in honour of this year’s host city, took fans on a tour of the backstage dressing rooms.
In the clip shared on Instagram, Greg said: “It’s time for the annual dressing room tour.” He admitted his joint tour with Ed Sheeran wasn’t going to be replicated, but still brought the “chaos”.

First up was a brief moment with his ex, Ellie Goulding. The duo dated for around 18 months before breaking up in 2012. After Greg teased they were live, a stunned Ellie, who was winding down after her performance in the sun.
And Greg told her it was a good one, before confused Ellie asked what was going on. As the presenter told the singer it was “a dressing room tour,” he then focused in on Ellie’s partner, Beau Minniear.
The American actor, who welcomed a child with Ellie in March, was in her dressing room and Greg asked if he could say hello. As he did, Beau was seen wearing a vest top with his bulging muscles on show as he held his partner’s bag.
It was then that Greg said: “Can I just say something? You’ve got amazing arms. Can you just pop your arm out the door?”
Not looking entirely sure on what was gong on, he obliged, holding out a bag from inside the room. Greg then said: “I’m gonna move on. Love you, bye.” Ellie was left waving as Greg moved on to try to grab Skye Newman’s attention.
Fans in the comments section were loving the banter, with one user writing: “@greg_james radio 1 would be nothing without you!!!”
But another user said:” Awkwardly bumping into your ex and her new bloke “nice arms”!” A third however enjoyed the interaction, calling it “not awkward” but “gorgeous”.
“As is Beau,” Greg replied to the comment.
Greg had earlier gushed over the Big Weekend being back in Sunderland for the first time in two decades. He posted: “Have I mentioned I love spending time in the north east?
“I’ve loved getting to properly know Sunderland this week – thanks for making us all so welcome. It’s a great city full of very funny passionate people, amazing food, an exciting music scene, a brilliant student radio station (SPARK!), a football team with a nice kit and UNBELIEVABLY good pubs.”
The weekend got off to a flier thanks to an impressive set by Fatboy Slim. He had finished the Friday night action after the likes of Sonny Fodera and MK had entertained the crowds.
The weekend also played host to the likes of Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zara Larsson before the three-day concert came to an end with Olivia Dean.
