The most promising indication yet that running back Cam Skattebo could be ready to go for Giants training camp this summer was seen during Monday’s first day of the mandatory minicamp.
Skattebo participated in individual drills, taking handoffs, running routes and catching passes. This was another step forward for Skattebo, who suffered a hard-to-watch injury October 26 in a loss to the Eagles. He suffered an open dislocation to his right ankle and needed emergency surgery that night in Philadelphia to repair the dislocation, tibia fracture and ruptured deltoid ligament.
That injury ended Skattebo’s rookie season after only 10 games. He rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns and delighted Giants fans with his hard-charging style, backflip celebrations and repeated head butts with 2026 draft classmate Jaxson Dart.
The Giants have maintained that Skattebo will be ready for camp at the end of July.
“I was happy,’’ head coach John Harbaugh said of Skattebo’s participation in practice. “He was telling me today, and the trainer told me, too, that he was going to get some plays in group and plays in team, and I was like, that’s where you want him to be. He’s worked super hard, super hard. I did mention maybe no backflips out here today. We agreed.’’
Edge rusher Abdul Carter limped off the field and into the field house with his left sock and football shoe off after an incident during practice. “Looks like he twisted his ankle to some degree,’’ Harbaugh said. “Doesn’t look serious.’’
Former Giants linebacker and NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor walked out to the field with co-owner Chris Mara and they watched practice together. Another Hall of Fame linebacker, Harry Carson, also attended practice and he and Taylor addressed the team afterward. … Co-owner John Mara, battling cancer, also watched from the field. … General manager Joe Schoen accompanied former Bills head coach Sean McDermott to the field. They worked together in Buffalo. McDermott compiled a record of 98-50 and made the playoffs eight times in nine years before he was fired after the Bills lost to the Broncos in the AFC divisional round.
“Having Sean visit for a couple days, talk football with, and all those things has been great,’’ said Harbaugh, who added that McDermott will also attend Tuesday’s practice. “Sean and I go back a long way, go back to the Eagles. He was there when I was there together, and it’s great. I can’t wait to hear his thoughts on practice and what he thought of the guys and the players and all those things, the schemes, things like that. Just get his two cents.’’
Dart connected on a deep pass to rookie Malachi Fields, with CB Greg Newsome applying close coverage. Dart tossed a floater down the field intended for Darnell Mooney that was intercepted by CB Paulson Adebo. … The kicking derby on a breezy afternoon was won by rookie Dominic Zvada, who went 8-for-8 on field goals. Ben Sauls was 4-for-8.
