Kate Moss, Sabrina Carpenter, Benedict Cumberbatch and Cole Palmer were on hand to celebrate Madonna’s upcoming album in a new film
Madonna is no stranger to causing a stir but her new film, to celebrate her upcoming Confessions II album, might just be the raunchiest release yet.
The Material Girl icon is set to drop her new record, a follow-up to 2005’s Confessions On A Dancefloor – on July 3.
To celebrate the launch, the 67-year-old dropped an immersive movie which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, including cameos from Sabrina Carpenter, Kate Moss, Benedict Cumberbatch and many more.
“Thanks for coming,” she began the clip. “Sometimes I like to just hide in the shadows. Create a new persona. A different identity.
“I can be whoever I want to be. Honestly, I wish I could be like other people and just not care. That’s why I like to go dancing.
“Out here on the dance floor, I feel so free.”
Just moments after sharing her freedom, the scenes cut to Madonna lying in a woodland, with laser beams shooting out of her nether regions. She wasn’t alone, as lights emitted from dancers around her – which she later joked to Anderson Cooper can “get quite hot”.
While celebrating her new era, Madge took the moment to reflect on her previous music moments, blessing fans with Easter Eggs for Deeper and Deeper, and Open Your Heart. At one point, she hopped up on a table with a dance routine similar to her moves in Hung Up.
After footage of a car crash, she strolled into a club where she was surrounded by very scantily clad partiers – which included a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo by Julia Garner, who had been tipped to play her in a biopic. In the appearance, the Ozark actress was seen dressed up like Madonna from the Vogue music video in another nod to her legendary catalogue.
One slightly less surprising celebrity appearance came from Sabrina Carpenter, who collaborated with Madge for Bring Your Love – and invited her on stage during her recent Coachella performance.
In one of the longest moments from the film, the Taste singer was seen writhing around the floor at the rave before joining Madonna on stage for a very intimate moment, sending the crowd wild.
The Me Against The Music musician then slipped into a shiny blue mini dress and futuristic silver boots in the bathroom while men including footballers Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro lined up at urinals, turning their heads to watch her performance.
As the party continued in the loo, things took a turn when Madge grabbed a man and made a beeline for a cubicle, where they got hot and heavy. Richard E Grant was seen dancing away in the stall next to her, while Benedict Cumberbatch, Odessa A’zion, Gwendoline Christie and Kate Moss were among those letting their hair down in the main bathroom.
The footage felt like an utter fever dream which abruptly changed tempo when Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes “Lola” Leon, walked right up to the camera and declared: “I wish a motherf**ker would”.
The 29-year-old took viewers around the party while revellers were seen thrashing in beds, drinking champagne and smoking in a bathtub. In a meta moment, many were grouped watching footage of Madonna from earlier in the film, while eating bananas.
The camera panned over to Lourdes, who simply said, “Cut, b***h,” as the credits rolled. Fans couldn’t get enough of the 13-minute film and flocked to heap praise on the music legend on YouTube. One said: “Seriously, how can one be this iconic for this long. Wow Madonna. You’re the true and forever queen of pop! No notes.”
“We’ve been living through an MTV drought for years. Then Madonna comes along and drops a 13-minute audiovisual feast that reminds everyone why she was never just making music videos—she was creating culture,” another agreed.
A viewer wrote: “In a time when visuals barely matter anymore, Madonna shows up with a whole film for 6 songs. This is what music video culture used to mean—she’s showing us once again why she’s the last TRUE POPSTAR!”
“This isn’t just a series of videos, this is an IMMERSIVE VISUAL EXPERIENCE! This is an EVENT! The new ERA of THE QUEEN has arrived,” a YouTube user added.
Madonna is going all out for the release of her highly-anticipated 15th studio album, which marks her first studio album in almost seven years, since Madame X in 2019.
Days after shutting down Times Square in New York for a pop-up performance with Grindr, she is in talks for a similar concert in London. An insider told the Sun: “Performing is everything to Madonna and she is going all out to make sure this era is one of her greatest.”
They added that, while a full-scale world tour is “not in the works”, Madonna “is currently mulling over a number of live show options for a handful of dates.”
