Adam Sandler’s Anti-Suit Bit Is Starting To Get Old

Adam Sandler wants the world of entertainment to finally take him seriously as an Oscar-worthy dramatic actor, yet he expects the Academy to let him collect his prize in basketball shorts.

For reasons that continue to baffle the fashion industry, Happy Madison don and Saturday Night Live legend Sandler is one of the most influential style icons of the 2020s, despite the fact that he rarely wears a single garment that he didn’t get from Target in 2005. Through his slovenly appearances on red carpets across the world, the comedy superstar has unintentionally popularized “Sandlercore,” a fashion trend defined by comfortable, loose-fitting, well-worn clothes that Sandler’s Hollywood contemporaries would consider to be too casual even for an afternoon spent on the couch.

At the same time, Sandler has been desperately lobbying the elites of the film industry to finally honor him with that elusive Oscar nomination while he works with esteemed directors on awards-friendly drama films, such as the upcoming Noah Baumbach project Jay Kelly.

While on the press tour for Jay Kelly, Sandler spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the grueling life of an A-lister on the Oscars campaign trail, bemoaning the draconian dress code at such industry events. “It’s been horrendous,” Sandler said of all the suit-wearing he’s been doing as of late. “I don’t like the feeling.”

Basically, wearing suits makes Sandler feel the same way we did when we watched Murder Mystery 2.

“I think I only have three different suits, and each one of them I don’t like,” Sandler said of his wardrobe during the Jay Kelly tour, breaking down the torturous ensembles one piece at a time. “I can’t stand the pants, I can’t stand the jackets, the stupid shirts. Hate them all.” When the interviewer suggested that, despite Sandler’s discomfort, he’s actually looked downright dashing during the media circus, Sandler shut him down, saying, ”No. Thank you.”

Apparently, Sandler’s buttoned-up look during the pre-release press tour is the work of his Jay Kelly co-star, George Clooney. “I’ve actually been making Adam wear suits,” Clooney told PEOPLE ahead of the premiere of Jay Kelly at the New York Film Festival back in September. “Don’t you think he looks nicer instead of those big baggy shorts?” Clooney added.

If the goal of the makeover is to give Sandler a respectable image that will resonate with awards voters, then, so far, Clooney’s plan is working – ahead of the release of Jay Kelly in select theaters this Friday, Sandler is already generating some Oscar buzz for his performance in the film. Up until now, that hallowed Academy Award nomination has been elusive for Sandler, a point that has been a thorn in his side since the start of his “serious artist” arc.

For instance, following his critically acclaimed performance in the 2019 cult hit thriller Uncut Gems, Sandler famously declared that, if he didn’t get an Oscar nomination for the role, “I’m going to f—ing come back and do one again that is so bad on purpose just to make you all pay.” Between The Wrong Missy, Hubie Halloween and Home Team, he made us pay thrice over for the snub.

Now, Sandler is trying to make another go at Oscar gold, and he’s even willing to wear a tie in order to earn his flowers on Hollywood’s biggest night. Nevertheless, Sandler’s constant whining about having to look decent in order to be taken seriously by the most prestigious organization in the industry may not bode well when the voters cast their ballots – as long as there’s a non-zero chance that Sandler will wear a stained t-shirt to the Oscars ceremony, the Academy may not risk giving him a nod.
