Bagalkot: An 18 month old girl child who accidentally fell into a water sump while playing outside her house in Navanagar died on Monday, police said.

While the hospital authorities declared the child dead, the family of the child reportedly kept her body in salt for nearly two hours in the hope that she could be revived. However, when there was no response, the family was convinced that she could not be brought back to life and proceeded with the subsequent formalities.

The deceased child was playing in front of her house in Navanagar on Monday when she went missing.

According to police, family members who searched for the child alerted the police. During the search operation, police asked residents to check nearby sumps. The girl was subsequently found in the sump opposite the house and was rushed to the Navanagar District Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

After the body was brought to the hospital, family members reportedly relied on claims that were also circulating on social media that a deceased person could be revived by being placed in salt. Acting on that belief, they placed the child’s body in salt for nearly two hours while keeping her face uncovered.

When there was no response, and the family became convinced that the child could not be revived, the body was handed over for post-mortem examination and further procedures.
