Ariana Grande has revealed that she and Wicked co-star Cynthia Eviro called the movie’s director to ask for one iconic line to be added back in after reading the script for the first time
As the second instalment of the Wicked movie is due to be released into cinemas on November 21, Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, has revealed the one thing she and co-star Cynthia Eviro begged the director to change about the script.
The first movie was released in 2024 and immediately captured audiences. Not only was it one of the biggest blockbusters of the year, it broke numerous box office records and soon became the highest-grossing adaptation of a Broadway musical. It earned more than $750 million (£570,296,250) worldwide and fans also praised Ariana and Cynthia for their performances.
In various interviews, the two actresses have revealed just how much these roles have meant to them. Both dreamed of landing the part for years – and because of this, they were determined to do it justice. One way to stay true to the musical was to get even the minor details correct.
Appearing on the Sentimental Men podcast, Ariana spoke about a line that her and Cynthia were determined to get into the movie.
The line “The Wizard will see you now” is iconic in Wicked because it echoes a famous moment in The Wizard of Oz movie released in 1939.
It also comes at a brilliant time in the musical. During the One Short Day song, the stage and set transforms into the glittering Emerald City.
The line is loaded with expectation, but it also foreshadows the disappointment and complexity that follows when the Wizard is revealed to be less than magical.
In that simple sentence, there is a lot at stake. And it seems the leading ladies were well aware of this when they realised the line was missing from the movie!
Ariana was so shocked that it hadn’t been included in the script that she rang Cynthia to tell her.

Ariana asked Eviro: “Did you see that f***ing ‘Wizard will see you know’ is missing?”
Then, Cynthia quickly flicked to the scene in question and was equally unimpressed by the change.
Following the call together, the pair rang director Jon M. Chu in order to address that part of the script.
Ariana explained: “It was our first conversation after the script. The first thing on our task list, we literally bombarded him – I added her into the chat. We were both just like ‘we have to handle this.”
The former Disney star said that Cynthia had told Jon: “It can’t be that. It needs to be ‘The Wizard will see you now’. I’m not kidding, it needs to be that.”
Thankfully, the actresses were listened to and the line did end up being added to the film. The director, Jon, even made a cameo to perform the famous quote himself!
Viewers were impressed with the stars’ dedication to the film and rushed to the comments section to thank Ariana.
One person said: “There is no bigger Wicked fan than Ari. She said she would take care of Glinda when she got the role but she actually took the best care of the full musical. We thank you Ari.”
A second agreed, gushing: “She made sure it was amazing.”
Meanwhile, a third added: “Can we just talk about her bang on Cynthia impression for a sec.”
