Clay Holmes knows what it’s like to get roughed up as a closer in The Bronx and understands the feeling of getting booed at Yankee Stadium after blowing a lead late in a game.

And he also gets the draw of staying in that spotlight and proving that you can withstand it, which is why he is not only looking forward to having Devin Williams in the Mets bullpen next season, but also admires the former Yankee’s fortitude in deciding to stay in the city, even when given the chance to pitch somewhere else.

“There are always gonna be moments you have to overcome,” Holmes said by phone from his home in Georgia, where he’s begun getting ready for 2026.

“When you’re in a big market like New York, you’re gonna face some challenges, and being able to overcome them teaches you a lot, and there’s a lot you can take away from that,” the right-hander said.
