Donald Trump makes BIG claim, says India no longer buying oil from Russia, Modi government reacts, US tariff war likely to...

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump, while addressing an event at the White House on November 11, said that India has largely stopped purchasing Russian oil, and the US will now move to reduce tariffs. After Trump’s statement, experts have suggested that before moving forward with any trade agreement, India should urge the US to roll back the 25 percent “Russian oil” tariff.

US President Trump on Tuesday said that the United States and India are very close to reaching a trade agreement. He promised to reduce tariffs on India, adding that the higher tariffs were initially imposed because India was importing oil from Russia.

Supreme Court Hearing on Trump Tariffs

It is important to note that Donald Trump’s remarks on India came at a time when the US Supreme Court started hearing a case related to tariffs. The key question before the court is whether the President has the authority to impose such duties under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Several lower courts have raised concerns about whether the law grants such broad powers.

If the Supreme Court rules against Trump, these tariffs would become invalid. This could once again reshape the global trade landscape and have a direct impact on the ongoing US-India trade negotiations.

India Reacts:

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that the Indian government is working relentlessly toward a fair, equitable, and balanced trade agreement with the United States. The minister also said that they are preparing for every possible contingency. Speaking at Industry Conclave 2025, held at Sushma Swaraj Bhavan in the national capital, Goyal emphasized that national interest will remain the top priority in finalizing the trade deal.

Removing the ‘Russian Oil’ Tariff Is Essential

As per the think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), the Modi government should first completely exit from the import of sanctioned Russian oil and then urge the United States to remove the 25 percent “Russian oil” tariff in order to restore competitiveness. Only after that should India begin trade negotiations with the US on equal terms.
