History was made at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival as Elephants in the Fog became the first Nepali feature film to win an award at the prestigious festival. The film competed in the Un Certain Regard section and won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize.

It is written and directed by Abhinash Bikram Shah.

Set in a small Nepali village affected by frequent elephant attacks, the film follows Pirati, the matriarch of a community of transgender women. Pirati dreams of living a “normal” life with Master, the moustachioed man she loves. However, when one of the girls from her community goes missing, she is forced to choose between love and her responsibility towards her people.

It stars Pushpa Thing Lama, Deepika Yadav, Jasmine Bishwakarma, Shanti Giri, Gauri Malla, Maotse Gurung, Sanjay Gupta Dura, Mahima Nawabag and Akanksha Karki and is presented by two Nepali banners, Underground Talkies Nepal and Jayanthi Creations. It is produced by Anup Paudel and Prachanda Man Shrestha.
