Concerned Gemma Collins said ‘please god we will be back together soon’ as her 70-year-old mum Joan returned to hospital, months after her last battle with pneumonia
Gemma Collins’ mum is back in hospital after being struck down with pneumonia for the second time in the space of six months days after the star revealed her own health battle.
Beloved Joan, 70, rushed to get medical support and remains in doctors’ care as she battles the potentially-deadly infection. Worried Gemma says she has struggled to sleep after a difficult few days for the family. The pensioner had previously hospitalised in December but made a quick recovery.
The GC this afternoon announced her mum has contracted the bug again, and posted a photo of her in the ward on Instagram. The snap was captioned: “Sending my mummy so much love she has caught Pneumonia but she is doing well thank you to all the wonderful nurses and doctors for looking after her. Still looking glam mummy.”
She then spoke of her concern as she added: “Was lovely to have a laugh with her today no day is ever promised couldn’t sleep last night at all with worry.”
In her next post, Gemma shared a video of Joan during one of their trips to the shops as she prayed: “Please god we will be back together soon shopping.”
Pneumonia is inflammation in the lungs usually caused by an infection. It makes it harder for oxygen to pass from the lungs into the bloodstream and it will trigger symptoms focused on the airways and lungs.
Symptoms can start suddenly or gradually over a few days. They include a cough, shortness of breath, a high temperature, chest pain, an aching body, feeling very tired, loss of appetite, making wheezing noises when you breathe and feeling confused.
The TV star, who shot to fame on The Only Way Is Essex, revealed late last year that she had gone through the “toughest week” and said her mum, 70, was “really struggling”.
She urged her fans to pray for Joan and thanked the medical staff at Broomfield Hospital for looking after her mum.
Joan had been rushed to the hospital several times over the past few years. In 2024, Gemma revealed that Joan had been unwell, informing fans that “no day is to be taken for granted.” She said: “No day is to be taken for granted. Mum went for a check-up and was kept in the hospital last night. This year has been one thing after another.”
She also told how Joan could have died during a hospital emergency. Speaking to The Sun, Gemma said: “I’ve had a lot of stress the last couple of weeks. My mum was suddenly taken into hospital and I was told she could die. They would not resuscitate her if she went into cardiac arrest.
“So imagine that, you know, I’m in the hospital having been out for dinner the day before, and then the next day I’m like, ‘wow’, so that was a massive shock.” It comes as Gemma teased she may quit the UK for a new life in desert paradise.
The NHS urges anyone who thinks they may have pneumonia and experiences the following to call 999:
- you’re struggling to breathe – you’re choking, gasping and unable to speak
- you have pale, blue or blotchy skin, lips or tongue
- you suddenly feel confused – for example, you do not know where you are
- you cannot wake your baby and they feel floppy
