Govinda’s Alleged Extramarital Affair With Rani Mukerji Left His Wife, Sunita Shocked And Devastated

The duo fell in love and got married in 1987, when Govinda was trying to find a foothold in the industry. Not just his professional life, but Govinda’s personal life too gained a lot of attention throughout the 90s as he was linked to almost all his leading ladies. One of them was Rani Mukerji, who was paired with Govinda in many films, and the duo was considered an iconic pair.

Govinda was one of the highest-paid actors in the ’90s, and during the peak of his career, he signed the film, Hadh Kar Di Aapne, which starred Rani Mukerji opposite him. Rani too was one of the leading ladies of Bollywood during that time, after giving hits like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Hello Brother.

During the making of the film, both Rani and Govinda developed a friendship, and, according to multiple reports, it soon turned into love. Many of the film’s scenes were shot in Switzerland and the US, and while filming romantic scenes, Govinda and Rani fell for each other. As per multiple reports, as soon as the shooting ended, Govinda was head over heels in love with Rani. They stayed in touch even after the film was wrapped.

During that time, tabloids carried many gossip stories about celebrities, and it was reported that Govinda had gifted Rani many expensive items, including a luxury car and an apartment. A tabloid also reported that Govinda and Rani were caught together in a hotel room. The news about Govinda and Rani’s affair left his wife, Sunita, shocked and devastated.

The reports also stated that Sunita was so upset with Govinda that she decided to leave him and went to her parents’ home along with her kids. She warned Govinda and asked him to choose between the actress and his family, which ultimately ended his affair with Rani.

When the media reported Rani and Govinda’s affair, the actress herself took matters into her own hands and responded to the speculation. She not just rubbished the reports, but also called Govinda a ‘hamdard’. Speaking about the same to a leading publication in a throwback interview, Rani said:

“The press has always assumed that any heroine who works with Govinda in three or four films is having an affair with him. I am not the first one to be linked with him. I know just one thing that it’s difficult to find a nice friend, a hamdard like Govinda.”

Rani Mukerji suggested Govinda’s name for Kill Dill

Govinda’s career faded after 2009, and he was desperate to make his comeback into films. He made a comeback to movies with the film, Kill Dill, playing the role of ‘Bhaiyaji’. However, not many people know this, but it was Rani who suggested Govinda’s name for the film. A source once shared:

“Rani knew that Govinda was desperate to make a comeback. When she heard the script for Kill Dill, she immediately suggested to Shaad Ali to consider Govinda to play Bhaiyaji.”

When Govinda confessed to being attracted to Divya Bharti

Govinda’s linkups have often made headlines and stirred up controversy in his and Sunita’s marriage. Be it his affair with Neelam or linkup with Juhi Chawla, Govinda’s dating life has always made its way to the spotlight. Not just this, the actor has openly confessed his feelings for one of his co-actresses, and it was none other than the late actress, Divya Bharti.

In a throwback interview with Stardust, Govinda spoke fondly of the gorgeous Divya Bharti while he was married to Sunita. The actor then revealed that he was resisting Divya’s charms and said:

“Divya is a very sensuous girl. It’s difficult for a man to resist her. I know Sunita is going to be very upset with all this. But she should know that I am still resisting Divya’s charms. I haven’t given in to the temptation as yet. Tomorrow, who knows, I may get involved again, and then, maybe I will marry the girl I get involved with. But Sunita should be prepared for it.”

Govinda and Sunita’s divorce rumours

Govinda and Sunita’s marital life has been going through a difficult time, and it is reported that all is not well in their paradise. According to a report by Hauterrfly, Sunita Ahuja had filed for divorce from Govinda at the Bandra family court in December 2024. She moved the case under Section 13 (1) (i), (ia), (ib) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, citing adultery, cruelty, and desertion as grounds. Since June 2025, the couple has been undergoing court-mandated counselling.
