Is ‘South Park’ Finally Tackling Its AI-Generated Imitators?

If you piss off Trey Parker and Matt Stone, there’s a very good chance that you might end up being roasted on South Parkas Russell Crowe once found out the hard way.

Now the show may be turning its attention to the company behind the AI-generated South Park rip-offs that have been clogging up the internet of late, judging from the recently-released teaser.

The episode, “Sora Not Sorry,” will reportedly be about how “Butters’ AI revenge plan backfires, igniting an epidemic of fake videos at school that leaves Detective Harris struggling to tell fantasy from reality.”

Targeting AI, and namechecking “Sora” specifically, may be personal for Parker and Stone. As we mentioned last month, the updated version of OpenAI’s video generator, Sora 2, made it shockingly easy for any internet rando to make their very own South Park episodes – just as long as you’re not hoping for any jokes, cohesive storylines or faith that humanity isn’t completely doomed.

In addition to the fact that Sora 2 was clearly trained on copyrighted material, which South Park obviously is, OpenAI reportedly had a “surprisingly cavalier” attitude towards intellectual property violations, forcing rights owners to “opt out of having their content appear” rather than policing it themselves.

CEO Sam Altman soon responded to the public backlash by announcing that OpenAI would “give rights holders more granular control over generation of characters,” while also suggesting that the fan-created soulless drek his company profited from actually adds more “value” to popular franchises.

Yeah, if South Park was worth $1.5 billion before, imagine how much it’s worth now that there’s a two-minute video of Cartman working at a Kitchener, Ontario Tim Hortons.

But even weeks after Altman’s announcement, people were still seemingly able to use Sora 2 to generate content that looks and sounds just like South Park but will make you want to sew your ears and eyes shut.

Obviously South Park has tackled AI a number of times in the past, most recently with Randy’s dependence on OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the episode “Sickofancy.”

And that wasn’t even the first time when the show presented ChatGPT in a less-than-flattering light.

But keep in mind, that was all before the company co-opted Parker and Stone’s literal voices. Perhaps it was only a matter of time before the duo went after Sora 2, even in spite of all that added “value” they’ve received.
