New Delhi: India and the US signalled efforts to reset bilateral ties as external affairs minister S. Jaishankar and US secretary of state Marco Rubio held talks on trade, energy security, cross-border terrorism and the West Asia conflict. The discussions marked the first comprehensive engagement after recent strain in ties, with both sides focusing on strengthening cooperation in defence, critical minerals, high technology and eco nomic sectors. Amidst the signs of thaw, US President Donald Trump showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On call with US ambassador to India Sergio Gor on the Ameri can National Day celebrations here, Trump said: “I love India… I love PM Modi and I am a big fan of PM Modi,” he said. Rubio rejected suggestions of weakening ties.

“The US-India relationship has not lost any momentum. I understand why some people might say that. This is not about India. This is about the United States in terms of trade,” he said. Calling India a key partner, he added, “India is an important strategic partner of the US, one of our most important strategic partners in the world.” Dr Jaishankar outlined India’s five-point approach to global stability. “Let me state India’s broad position… And I would make five points here. One, that we advocate dialogue and diplomacy to address conflicts. Two, we support safe and unimpeded maritime commerce,” he said.

“Three, we demand scrupulous respect for international law. Four, we are against the weaponisation of market shares and resources. And five, we believe in the value of trusted partnerships and resilient supply chains to de-risk the global economy,” he added.
