A group of university students got more than they bargained for while heading to lectures. That’s because they stumbled across a surprise performance from a world-famous singer.
Students at the University of Suffolk were left stunned when singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran casually turned up and started busking on the waterfront. Sharing the unexpected moment on social media, the university said: “Well… this wasn’t on the timetable. A surprise performance from Ed Sheeran on the Waterfront today. Not your average day at the University of Suffolk.”
In a video shared on Facebook, Sheeran can be heard performing his hit song The A Team as a crowd gathered around and sang along to the lyrics.
Fans were quick to share their excitement in the comments, with one user saying: “Good old Suffolk boy, back to his roots.” Another added: “Not many superstars would do that.”
A third wrote: “Just a normal day with our very own Tractor Boy entertaining the passers-by along Ipswich waterfront… brilliant!!”
One more commented: “Legend. I would have been lost for words walking and seeing him singing by the waterfront. Bring a bit of excitement and joy to ordinary people’s lives.”
While Sheeran was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, he was raised in Framlingham, Suffolk, and has remained closely connected to the county throughout his career.
The chart-topping star has been spotted around Suffolk in recent days, making surprise appearances at the university and even dropping into a local curry house.
In September, he released his eighth studio album, Play, marking a fresh chapter in his musical journey.
The release signalled the end of his famous mathematical album series, which included + (Plus) in 2011, x (Multiply) in 2014, ÷ (Divide) in 2017, = (Equals) in 2021 and – (Subtract) in 2023.
Following those releases, he embarked on the hugely successful Mathematics Tour before shifting his focus to Play. The album names have long sparked curiosity among fans.
One confused fan asked on Reddit: “Why is Ed Sheeran naming his albums with mathematical operators? Does it symbolise something?”
According to previous comments from the singer, the symbols were chosen partly because he wanted each album to be instantly recognisable, with simple artwork featuring a single colour and one distinctive symbol.
The idea was that fans could spot an album advert from a distance and immediately know it was his. However, the concept went beyond marketing.
Sheeran has previously revealed that he came up with the five-album mathematical series when he was just 18 years old, planning each symbol to represent a different chapter of his career before eventually moving on to a new era with Play.
