Navy Pilot, Doug McCain, Eldest Son Of Sen. John, Passes Away At 66, Is Survived By Wife, Ashley

Doug McCain, the eldest child of the late US senator John McCain, tragically passed away at 66. Doug’s family confirmed the heartbreaking news of his death. Doug is survived by his wife, Ashley, mom, Carol and his two children. Doug, who was born in 1959, was adopted by Carol’s first husband, Sen. John McCain. He was the pilot for American Airlines and flew jets in the Navy.

What caused Doug McCain’s untimely death at 66?

According to the official statement of Doug’s family, the Navy pilot died suddenly. The cause of his death is yet to be revealed. It was Doug’s sister, Meghan McCain, who confirmed the heartbreaking news of his death. Taking to her Instagram handle on May 23, 2026, Meghan penned an emotional note for her brother, Doug. She described Doug as a ‘wonderful and joyful man’. She mentioned how the late Navy pilot used to bring humour and fun to every conversation. Meghan offered her heartfelt condolences to his wife, Ashley and his two children, Caroline and Shepp. Meghan’s note can be read as:

“I am deeply saddened to share the news of my brother Doug McCain’s sudden passing. He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humour, fun and great conversation to every room. I will cherish our memories together. Our prayers are with his wife Ashley and children Caroline and Shepp.”

Tributes pouring in for 66-year-old Navy pilot, Doug McCain

Shortly after Meghan confirmed the death of Doug McCain, tributes began pouring in for the 66-year-old Navy pilot. American news anchor and TV host, Harris Faulkner, wrote, “Heartbroken to learn that your beloved brother has passed away. Heaven has gained an amazing angel. All our love and prayers to you and your family, Harris, Tony, Bella and Danika.” A user commented, “I am so sorry, Meghan. I have heard it said that the death of a sibling is like losing a part of yourself & your history. I have found that this is true. I wish you and your family peace and strength during this sad time.” 

A third user penned, “Meghan, I know that no amount of words would help in this horrible time. But, please know you are loved and that there are so many people to lean on. My most sincere condolences to you and your entire family.” A fourth user wrote, “Oh my gosh, dear Lord, please surround this family with your comfort and let him be with his dad and you Lord …amen.” Another comment can be read as:

“So sorry for your loss, Meghan.. My deepest condolences to you and your beautiful family.. Sending you love, comfort and strength at this difficult time.”

In fact, the McCain Institute also offered its heartfelt condolences to Doug’s family. They wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “We extend our condolences to the McCain family following the passing of Douglas ‘Doug’ Shepp McCain, the eldest son of John McCain. A Navy pilot like his father, Doug will be remembered as a patriot and friend to the many alumni of Sen. McCain’s Institute, campaigns & Senate staff.”

Doug McCain, who was born in 1959, grew up in a close-knit Naval community in Florida. Doug was adopted by Sen. John McCain after marrying Carol in 1965. However, Doug’s adoptive father was absent for much of his childhood, serving overseas, and as a P.O.W. According to a report by People, Doug attended Jacksonville Episcopal High School and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1982 with a degree in Systems Engineering. During his time at the University of Virginia, he met his wife, Ashley. As per his obituary, Doug joined the Navy and became a captain with American Airlines.
