Delhi Blast: The former husband of Dr Shaheen Shahid, arrested in connection with the Delhi blast terror module, says he is shocked by the allegations and never imagined the woman he once knew could be involved in any unlawful activity.

Dr Zafar Hayat, an ophthalmologist at KPM Hospital in Lucknow, described his ex-wife as a calm, studious person who rarely discussed religion or ideology during their years together. “Even during our marriage, I never felt she could be involved in anything wrong,” he told reporters.

Dr Shaheen Shahid’s Early Life and Career in Kanpur

Dr Shaheen, 43, a former government medical lecturer in Kanpur, was arrested from Haryana’s Faridabad on November 10 as part of a wider investigation into a terror network stretching from Kashmir to Delhi. Her younger brother, Dr Parvez Ansari, was also arrested from Lucknow on Tuesday for alleged links to the same module.

Marriage and Family Life with Dr Zafar Hayat

Dr Hayat recalled meeting Shaheen when she joined Kanpur’s GSVM Medical College. The two married in 2003 and have two children together. “The first few years of our marriage were good,” he said, adding that she was deeply interested in her studies and maintained a calm demeanor.

However, he said differences emerged over their future plans. “The only difference between us was in our thinking, she wanted to go abroad, while I wanted to live in India. Shaheen often insisted that we should move to Australia or a European country. I told her that it is fine here because we have all our relatives here and we would face problems abroad as we would be away,” Dr Hayat explained.

Divorce and Life After Separation

“One day, she suddenly left us. We divorced in 2015, and she never returned after that. There was never any conflict between us,” he said, emphasizing that their separation was not marked by any disputes or arguments.

After their separation, Dr Hayat said there was no contact between them. “She was a calm person, never discussed religion, and was focused on her career,” he added.

Dr Hayat said he has not yet spoken to his children about the recent developments. “When she left, our children were very young, one had just started school. The elder child was seven and the younger one was four. She never tried to reach out afterwards,” he said, adding that he has been raising them alone since the divorce.

Born and raised in Lucknow’s Hata Mustafa Khan area in Khandari Bazar, Shaheen was the daughter of Shahid Ansari, a retired staffer from the state health department.

Arrest from Faridabad and Connection to Terror Module

Investigators allege that Shaheen was living in Faridabad with Dr Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie, one of the module’s key accused, and that the two were in a relationship, according to officials from the UP Anti-Terrorism Squad. Police said she was arrested from Lucknow and flown to Srinagar for custodial interrogation.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police are probing whether she personally transported explosives recovered in Faridabad or acted as a logistical facilitator for the network. Her financial transactions, phone records and encrypted communications are being examined to determine if she was in contact with handlers abroad or had prior knowledge of the module’s plans, police said.

Younger Brother Dr Parvez Ansari Also Arrested

Dr Shaheen’s younger brother, Dr Parvez Ansari, was also arrested in Lucknow for alleged links to the same terror module, according to officials. Investigators are now looking into the family’s connections and potential involvement in the wider network.
