Vijayawada: Ahead of Bakrid, the NTR district police have intensified measures to curb illegal transportation and slaughter of animals across the commissionerate limits in compliance with directions issued by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Police commissioner S.V. Rajasekhar Babu announced the appointment of an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police-rank officer as nodal officer to oversee enforcement of animal protection laws during the festival period.

According to an official statement issued on Sunday, G. Rama Krishna has been appointed nodal officer.

Citizens were urged to report incidents involving cruelty to animals, illegal transportation or unlawful slaughter to the officer directly. Police also released a helpline number — 9490493192 — for reporting violations.

The commissioner said stringent action would be taken under the Andhra Pradesh Cow Slaughter Prohibition and Animal Preservation Act, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and other related laws.

As part of the enforcement drive, the NTR Police Commissionerate has formed joint action teams to conduct inspections and surveillance across the city.

Multiple check-posts are also being set up at key junctions to prevent illegal transportation of animals and related offences during the Bakrid season.
