Singer songwriter Caleb Shomo made a public statement about his sexuality this weekend, revealing to fans that he is gay, which his wife confirmed in an emotional follow up statement
Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo has come out as gay in an emotional statement that he shared with fans, while his wife of almost 14 years, Fleur Shomo, publicly offered her support despite this being what she described as a “hurtful” and “disorienting” time for her.
The musician, 33, who first rose to fame with metalcore band Attack Attack! before launching Beartooth, opened up about his sexuality in a candid Instagram post over the weekend.
Caleb wrote: “There’s been a lot of speculation surrounding my personal life as of late and I feel compelled to set the record straight before it affects those I love any further.
“I am a proudly gay man. This is something I’ve been unpacking and reckoning with in my life for quite some time now.” The rocker admitted that supressing his sexuality for years had taken a huge emotional toll on him, and revealed he spent a lot of the past decade trying to numb his feelings.
“I spent a decade burying feelings with alcohol,” he explained, adding that quitting drinking allowed him to begin exploring “why I felt this way for so long”.
Caleb continued: “It’s been a direct path to me reconciling with my sexuality in hopes that it will eventually lead to me experiencing self love.”
The musician also revealed that his upcoming music will reflect what he is experiencing in this new chapter of his life, and promised fans he intends to express himself more honestly than ever before.
He wrote: “I will only do what makes me happy at the deepest level and what is the most honest depiction of who I am.” This confession marks a turning point for the singer, whose music has explored themes of self-hatred, mental health struggles, and emotional turmoil since 2014.
Beartooth’s 2023 album The Surface already started hinting at a more hopeful outlook from Caleb, as it featured tracks such as Might Love Myself, which was all about focusing on self-worth after years of darkness.
Caleb previously spoke to The Rolling Stone about the “very revolutionary time” in his life that led up to writing that record. He admitted he had spent years feeling insecure and afraid of influencing others because of his struggles.
At the time, he said: “I’ve been very, very insecure; I’ve been so fucked up and thought I should not be any sort of influence.” The songwriter went on to add: “I feel like with this, I’m very proud of what I have to say. I want people to hear it.”
Caleb’s wife Fleur, who he married in April 2012, has also shared her own emotional statement online, where she admitted that the past few months have been incredibly painful.
“But I will always want to love, protect and support Caleb,” she wrote. “I have cared more about his well being over the years than anything else in the world.”
The My Top 5 podcast co-host admitted she had witnessed Caleb’s “confusion and pain” throughout his struggle with his sexuality, while also grappling with the impact it had on her own life.
She explained the complicated feelings she had in response to these revelations, adding: “You never want anything more for your person than for them to just be ok.
“You also ask yourself constantly if you’re a bad person for wondering wtf this means for your world & the anger you also feel. To support him whilst losing everything has been incredibly hard to figure out.”
Despite the heartbreak she feels right now, Fleur insisted that the relationship they had was genuine and filled with love. She continued: “Our nearly 14 years of marriage was wonderful and full of so much fun, adventure & love. Nobody will know anything about our marriage like we do.
“And no one can ever truly know what depths of love exist between two people unless they are those people. I already miss it & my husband more than anything. Our story was a good one. And now it’s done.” The pair do not share children.
Fans have now flooded Fleur’s previous Instagram posts with Caleb asking if she is okay and sending messages intended to support her during this complex time in both of their lives.
