CHENNAI: Assembly Speaker J C D Prabhakar dropped the charges levelled by the AIADMK against 21 of its party MLAs, who supported the TVK government during the vote of confidence in the House on May 13, under the anti-defection law and said that an investigation had been launched against four other MLA who had hence resigned their posts.
After 25 of the 47 AIADMK MLAs in the House voted in favour of the TVK government by going against the party whip, general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami filed a complaint against them, seeking their disqualification under the Anti-Defection Act.
Then, in the aftermath of four of those MLAs resigning their posts, Palaniswami handed over a letter to the Speaker requesting him to drop the charges against the MLAs as they had apologized but he wanted an enquiry into the resignation of four of MLAs – Sathyabama, Maragatham Kumaravel, Jayakumar and Esaki Subbiah.
Responding to the Palaniswami, the Speaker announced that he would not proceed against the 21 MLAs who had apologized for violating the whip but would investigate the four MLAs who had resigned their MLA posts. The four MLAs plan to seek re-election from their constituencies in TVK tickets in the bye elections.
