Sunny Deol's 'Lahore 1947' Becomes 'Batwara 1947', Here's Why The Makers Renamed The Film

Sunny Deol’s Lahore 1947 has been reintroduced to fans with a new name. After months of speculation, the makers of the much-awaited period drama have officially confirmed a major change. Amid the buzz around the same, let’s take a look at the reason behind the big decision.

Sunny Deol’s Lahore 1947 renamed

The film, which was originally slated as Lahore 1947, has now been renamed and will be known as Batwara 1947. The makers of the film made the announcement after months of speculation, unveiling a striking motion poster that offers the first glimpse into the Partition-era story and confirms the film’s theatrical release date. Aamir Khan Productions and Sunny Deol shared the title announcement teaser on Instagram with the caption:

“In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage. Watch #Batwara1947 in theatres from 14th August 2026.”

The newly released poster introduced Lahore 1947 as Batwara 1947. The video opened with the line, “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage.” Moments later, a fiery red slash tore through the screen, cutting through both the text and the map initially shown in the picture. What came next left the viewers mesmerised. The burning divide creates a dramatic visual representation of partition and sets the stage for the film’s central conflict. The viewers further get a glimpse of Sunny Deol’s character, looking bold as always.

Sunny Deol’s character runs alongside a steam train amid scenes of chaos, fires and fleeing crowds. Other characters briefly appear through the flames, including Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, and Karan Deol. The motion poster forms a stern image of what fans can expect from the upcoming film, with a powerful image of Sunny standing at the centre, holding a blazing torch. Behind him are Preity and Karan, both looking frightened. All the visuals finally lead to the title reveal as Batwara 1947.

Why did the makers change the name of Sunny Deol starrer from Lahore 1947 to Batwara 1947?

While no official reason for the change has been shared, it is believed that Aamir Khan moved away from the original title because he felt Batwara 1947 was a more accurate representation of the time and would reach a larger audience. However, securing the rights to the name was not easy, as the title Batwara was owned by the family of the late producer Salim Akhtar. Reports revealed that Aamir personally met with the family and explained his reason for the change, after which the family finally agreed.

Aamir Khan previously denied the buzz around the title change

The announcement comes months after reports first surfaced suggesting that the film’s makers were considering changing the title. The speculation was fuelled by concerns that a film named after a Pakistani city might not resonate with Indian audiences in the current landscape. However, in March 2026, Aamir Khan denied the rumours and maintained that the title would remain unchanged. Aamir had addressed the buzz and told Bollywood Hungama:

“Where did you hear that? No, the title of our film has not changed. As of now, it is Lahore 1947, and that’s how I would like it to be.”

About Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947

The film is adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s celebrated play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamya E Nai. For the unversed, it was a work that explored identity, displacement and humanity in the aftermath of partition. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film is being produced by Aamir Khan under Aamir Khan Productions. The film’s music has been composed by AR Rahman, while the lyrics are penned by Javed Akhtar.
