The qualifications for the 2026 European Championships concluded this evening, but the big news of the day emerged after the morning session of the final competition day.
For the first time in 76 years, Germany will miss the European Men’s Championships. The Germans were absent for the last time in 1950. Actually, Germany failed to qualify for the European Championships for the first time. In the past 99 years, the Germans missed the championships only twice, both times due to political reasons.
Almost all participating teams were confirmed yesterday, with the only remaining question being which team would qualify as the second-placed team in Group B in Istanbul.
Turkiye and Germany faced off in the decisive match for 2nd place in Istanbul. After a big battle, Turkiye won 17:16 and clinched 2nd place behind Slovakia. The Turks returned to the Europeans after a five-year absence, finishing 12th in Budapest in 2020 (the full list of qualified teams is provided at the end of the article).
Turkiye led 5:4 after the first quarter. At halftime, the hosts were still one step ahead (8:7). During a five-minute break (the qualifications have been played according to the new rules), the Germans didn’t find their rhythm. Turkiye dictated the pace in the opening minutes of the third period and went to 11:8. Germany shone in the last four minutes of the third period. It went on a 4:0 run and entered the final quarter leading 12:11.
Still, the hosts regained control in the fourth quarter. Turkiye built a 17:14 lead with 01:27 minutes left on the clock. Germany scored the last two goals in the match but couldn’t equalize.
Tough period for German water polo
The 2026 Europeans in Belgrade will be the 37th edition of the men’s continental water polo championships.
The first was held in 1926, and Germany won a bronze medal. Following that medal and before World War 2, the Germans took three silvers.
Absence only because of political reasons: Germany didn’t participate in the European Championships in 1947 and 1950, because almost all the country’s athletes were banned from participating in international competitions for several years after World War II.
West Germany did not participate in the 1962 European Championships due to political reasons, as the tournament was held in Leipzig, East Germany. Of course, the East German national team was present.
Between 1966 and 1989, West Germany was a regular participant in all European Championships. In 1989, it won its second gold medal. Shortly after, the country was reunified, and Germany participated in all European Championships from 1991 to 2024.
Two countries as rivals: Looking at the broader history, both West Germany and East Germany competed in all European Championships from 1954 to 1989, except for the, mentioned, 1962 tournament in Leipzig.
Medals: West Germany won two gold medals and one bronze, while East Germany secured one silver medal. After reunification in 1993, the unified German team managed to reach the podium once, winning bronze in 1995. Overall, German water polo teams have won a total of eight medals at the continental championships.
Last Olympic tournament in 2008: However, in recent years, the team has faced a difficult period. Germany has not qualified for the Olympic Games since 2008, and its last appearance in the World Championships was in 2022.
Great water polo coach, late Petar Porobic, who succeeded legendary German water polo player and coach, Hagen Stamm, on the bench of the national team several years ago, didn’t help Germany come close to European powerhouses.
Since December of 2022, Serbian coach Milos Sekulic has been leading Germany. With Sekulic on the bench, the Germans won 8th place in the 2023 World Cup and 7th place in the same competition this year. They finished 12th at the 2024 European Championships in Zagreb and Split.
In their first match in Istanbul, the Germans lost to Slovakia (8:13). After that, it was clear that the game against Turkiye would be a must-win game. Germany easily beat Sweden (30:3) and Finland (30:5) in the following two rounds. But, an ambitious team of Turkiye ended the Germans’ hopes of qualifying for the European Championships.
Drama in Malta
UPDATE (final day, evening session): The favorites recorded wins in the evening session in groups A, C and D and finished atop the standings.
The Netherlands beat Slovenia 19:9 in the last round of the group in Kranj. Ten goals separated the rivals in the duel between the 1st-placed and the 2nd-placed team in Group C in Tbilisi. Moreover, the final score was the same – host Georgia defeated Israel 19:9.
Malta was close to a big surprise in front of the home fans in the group in Gzira. The Maltese had a 9:6 lead in the fourth quarter of the game against France. However, the French caught up with the home team – 10:10 at the finish and the match continued in a shootout. France won 15:14 and kept 1st place, while Mala advanced to the 2026 Europeans from 2nd place in the group.
Bulgaria defeated Switzerland 14:13 in Tbilisi to finish in 3rd place in the group. This victory is very important for the Bulgarians because it is the first win for their male national team after 22 years.

Eight games will take place tomorrow on the final day of the European Men’s Championships Qualifications, but only one ticket for the 2026 Belgrade tournament is still available.
Slovakia secured its qualification yesterday. Today, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Georgia, Israel, France, and Malta joined the Slovaks.
The last, 16th spot at the next Europeans will be filled by Germany or Turkiye. These two teams will face off in the 5th round of Group B in Istanbul. It will be a decisive match for 2nd place in the group (Slovakia has already cemented the top position in the largest Turkish city).
The Netherlands and Slovenia qualified from Group A (Kranj). The Dutch demolished the Czech Republic (35:4) and Poland (29:3) today. Slovenia secured at least 2nd place and its 3rd consecutive European Championships appearance with a 16:6 victory over Great Britain. The Dutch and the Slovenians each have nine points. Tomorrow, they will play in the last round. If Slovenia doesn’t cause a big surprise, the Dutch will finish at the top of the group, and Slovenia will be in 2nd place.
Germany and Turkiye had easy matches against the Scandinavian teams in the fourth round of Group B in Istanbul before their crucial encounter tomorrow. Both winning teams scored 30 goals apiece today: Turkiye – Sweden 30:7 and Germany – Finland 30:5.
Georgia recorded a 24-win over Switzerland (29:5), while Israel defeated Bulgaria 16:9 in the second round in Group C in Tbilisi. Georgia will likely beat Israel tomorrow and retain first place, but securing second place and a spot at the 2026 Europeans is a significant success for Israel.
Finally, the favorites made no mistake in today’s matches in Group D in Malta. France beat Ukraine 24:10, and Malta defeated Portugal 17:13, so both teams will visit Belgrade next winter.

Slovakia has become the ninth team to secure a place at the European Men’s Championships, which will be held in Belgrade in January of next year.
The qualification tournament began on Sunday, featuring the first games in groups A and B, each containing five teams. Today, teams across all four groups were in action.
Slovakia was the first team to advance to the upcoming Championships through the qualifications, joining the eight teams that have already qualified according to the standings at the 2024 Europeans (Spain, Croatia, Italy, Hungary, Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania).
Slovakia was drawn into one of the toughest groups, based in Istanbul, where three rounds have already been played. The Slovaks opened the tournament with an easy victory over Sweden (21:11). This win set the stage for two critical matches the Slovaks played today. In the morning session, they defeated Germany 13:8. Several hours later, Slovakia faced the host team, Turkiye. After the first quarter, Slovakia led 4:0. However, Turkiye started to make a comeback. Still, Slovakia managed to secure three points, winning the match 13:12. Turkey never equalized and scored its 12th goal in the last second, when the outcome was already decided. Slovakia mathematically qualified for the European Championships. It will have an opportunity to maintain a perfect record in its last match against bottom-placed Finland. Meanwhile, Germany and Turkiye remain contenders for the only remaining ticket to Belgrade from this group.
All other favorites recorded convincing wins in their opening matches.
Georgia showed no mercy to Bulgaria in a 51-goal encounter. The Georgians collected the points with a 41:10 victory in front of the home crowd in Tbilisi. However, it is worth noting that Bulgaria has a very young team, with nine players born in 2005 or later.
The Netherlands sank Great Britain – 21:3 – in the group in Kranj, where host Slovenia started quite well, defeating the Czech Republic and Poland.. France ran over Portugal – 19:7 in the first round of the group in Gzira. The home team, Malta, earned an important and hard-fought victory over Ukraine, 13:11, in the same group.

The list of participating teams in the 2026 European Women’s Championship has been finalized, as eight teams secured their spots following four qualifying tournaments held over the weekend. Portugal, Romania, Germany, Turkey, Serbia, Switzerland, Israel, and Slovakia
The teams that qualified for the championships based on the standings at the 2024 Europeans are the Netherlands, Hungary, Spain, Greece, Italy, France, Great Britain, and Croatia.
We have all participating teams, but we are still awaiting confirmation on the dates and the host country for the championships. A few months ago, European Aquatics announced that the men’s and women’s championships would be held separately. The men’s teams will compete in Belgrade in January. However, there is no official information yet regarding the women’s tournament. Some sources suggest that Italy or Spain could be potential hosts for the event.
The final standings in all qualification groups are more or less as expected. Thirteen teams participated, so only five didn’t qualify. There were no surprises.
The group in Setubal (Portugal) was the most balanced. Host Portugal finished in 1st place, beating the Czech Republic 18:12 and Romania 13:7. Romania edged out the Czech Republic 12:11 to secure 2nd place and a qualifying berth. The Czech Republic was the only team that participated in the 2024 Europeans and in this season’s qualifications to fail to qualify for the next year’s Europeans.
Compared to the 2024 Europeans, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria will miss the next edition, but Bulgaria didn’t enter the qualifications.
Portugal and Switzerland replace these two nations.
Portugal returns to the European Championships after a ten-year absence. Switzerland hasn’t played at the continental championships since 1995.
The Swiss won 2nd place in Group C in Novi Sad – the only one with four teams. Host Serbia dominated, recording three convincing wins and finishing the tournament with a 72:16 goal difference. Switzerland defeated Finland 21:9 in the first round, while it beat Ukraine 10:7 in today’s decisive match for 2nd place.
Germany and Turkiye qualified from the group in Hannover. Both teams were too strong for Malta, and the Germans defeated the Turks 15:9 to finish atop.
Israel recorded two convincing wins over Slovakia and Sweden in Novaky. Slovakia, the home team, joined Israel at the 2026 Europeans, thanks to a 16:7 win over Sweden.
