PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi aims to make the Pakistan Super League the world’s leading franchise tournament, citing Pakistan’s cricketing talent and enthusiasm as key factors.
New Delhi: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has shared an ambitious plan for the Pakistan Super League (PSL), aiming to make it the world’s No.1 franchise cricket tournament. Describing the goal as realistic rather than overly optimistic, Naqvi said the objective “is not a difficult” one, given the wealth of cricketing talent and passion in Pakistan.
During the PSL Roadshow at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, Naqvi was present at the event alongside former Pakistan captains Wasim Akram and Ramiz Raja, with PSL CEO Salman Naseer moderating the discussion. The event was designed to promote the PSL brand and connect with global cricket stakeholders ahead of upcoming seasons.
Naqvi aims to make the PSL the top cricket league in the world
When Naqvi was questioned about his long-term plans, he confidently replied, “The vision is simple, to make PSL the top league in the world. With people like Ramiz and Wasim standing beside us, I am confident this is absolutely achievable,” he said.
However, he faced widespread trolling, from Indian cricket fans online, many recalling Naqvi’s controversial handling of the Asia Cup trophy presentation when India beat Pakistan in the final.
Naqvi claimed the trophy after India refused to accept it from him
Naqvi, who also serves as the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), took away the trophy after India refused to accept it directly from him, sparking diplomatic tensions between the cricket boards.
In a positive turn, both parties seem to be working toward a resolution. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that discussions had started during the recent ICC meetings in Dubai.
“I was a part of both the informal and formal meeting of the ICC. PCB chairperson Mohsin Naqvi was also present. During the course of a formal meeting, it was not on agenda but ICC facilitated a meeting between myself and the PCB chief separately in the presence of a senior ICC office-bearer and another senior official,” Saikia told PTI.
Saikia said that the matter will be resolved soon
He noted that the discussions were conducted in a respectful and productive manner, “It was really good to start the process of negotiation. Both sides cordially participated in the meeting which took place on the sidelines of the ICC board meet,” he said, expressing optimism that the matter will be resolved soon.
With the trophy now kept at the ACC headquarters in Dubai and its movement restricted on Naqvi’s instructions, the issue remains largely symbolic yet sensitive.
“Both sides will work out something to solve the issue at the earliest. The ice has been broken now,” Saikia added.
