Mangaluru: Police have booked and arrested two men including a Youth Congress leader after a person alleged that they blackmailed and extorted money from him by threatening to release his alleged obscene photographs and videos, and later falsely claimed that one of them had died by suicide.

Based on a complaint, police have registered a case against Jitesh and Nizam alias Ibrahim and launched an investigation. Both the accused have been arrested. Nizam, who was serving as the general secretary of the Dakshina Kannada Youth Congress Committee, was removed following the incident.

According to the complaint, the ordeal began in June 2024 when Jitesh allegedly contacted the complainant over the phone and sent him an obscene photograph. He allegedly threatened to make the material viral and send it to the complainant’s family members unless he paid Rs 35 lakh.

The complainant alleged that he later met Jitesh at a hotel, where he was threatened with dire consequences if the money was not paid. Fearing damage to his reputation, he allegedly handed over three cheques, including two for Rs 10 lakh each and another for Rs 15 lakh. Police sources said Rs 20 lakh was withdrawn using two of the cheques, while the third cheque could not be encashed due to insufficient funds.

The complaint further stated that Jitesh later visited the complainant’s residence and demanded more money. Around that time, Nizam, who was known to the complainant, allegedly intervened and took Jitesh away.

However, a week later, Nizam allegedly informed the complainant that Jitesh had died by suicide after leaving behind a note naming him. He allegedly warned that the suicide note would be circulated and that the complainant could face a criminal case and imprisonment.

Using these threats, Nizam allegedly extorted money from the complainant over a prolonged period. The complainant alleged that between June 2024 and January 2026, Nizam collected Rs 2.57 crore from him.

The alleged deception came to light when the complainant reportedly saw Jitesh alive in Mangaluru. When questioned about it, Nizam allegedly continued to threaten him, according to the complaint.

The complainant further alleged that on June 1 this year, Jitesh again contacted him and demanded another Rs 10 lakh, threatening to circulate the alleged photographs and videos if the demand was not met. He also allegedly threatened to send the material to the complainant’s family and kill him.

Police have registered a case and are investigating the allegations. The probe will also ascertain whether the transactions and the amount allegedly paid by the complainant match his claims.

Meanwhile, following the incident, the Dakshina Kannada District Youth Congress has expelled Nizam from the party’s primary membership and removed him from the post of district general secretary following allegations of involvement in anti-social activities.

“It has come to the notice of the party that allegations have been made against Nizam for involvement in anti-social activities, which have adversely affected the discipline and reputation of the party. In view of this, and to safeguard the interests and discipline of the party, he has been expelled with immediate effect from the post of General Secretary of the Dakshina Kannada District Youth Congress Committee as well as from the primary membership of the Youth Congress,” a statement issued by District Youth Congress president Ibrahim Nawaz stated.
