وأوضح مركز الأبحاث الألماني لعلوم الأرض أنه تم تحديد مركز الزلزال، الذي وقع على عمق 98.5 كيلومترًا، عند التقاء دائرة عرض 15.59 درجة جنوبًا وخط طول 173.07 درجة غربًا.
ولم ترد حتى الآن أي تقارير عن وقوع خسائر بشرية أو أضرار مادية جراء الزلزال.
وتًعدُّ تونغا أرخبيلا يضم 176 جزرًا متناثرة في جنوب المحيط الهادئ، منها 52 جزيرة مأهولة فقط، وتقع في شمال غربي كل من نيوزيلندا وأستراليا.
