Markapuram: At least 10 passengers were charred to death and several others injured in a horrific road accident in Markapuram district on Thursday morning when a private travels bus collided with a tipper near Rayavaram.

According to preliminary information, the accident occurred between 6 am and 6.30 am when the bus, travelling from Hyderabad to Pamuru, was taking a turn near the quarry stretch. A speeding tipper reportedly rammed into the bus, triggering a massive fire in both vehicles.

The flames spread rapidly, engulfing the bus and the tipper completely. Passengers seated in the rear portion of the bus were unable to escape and were burnt alive, while around 10 passengers seated in the front managed to come out safely.

More than 20 passengers were travelling in the bus at the time of the mishap. The injured were shifted to a private hospital in Markapuram for treatment.

Officials fear the death toll may rise as some of the injured are stated to be in critical condition.

Police and fire services personnel rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. Preliminary reports suggest overspeeding by the tipper may have caused the accident.
