Around 1,000 goats died in a large barn fire in the town of Epe in the Netherlands. The animals were trapped in the barn when the fire started. They could not escape.
The fire started around 1:30 am on Tuesday. Emergency services were quickly called to the scene and several fire units worked to control the flames.
When firefighters arrived, most of the barn was already on fire. The let the barn burn down and stopped it from spreading to other buildings. All animals inside the barn died.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. Authorities say investigators will examine the site once it is safe.
Emergency services remained at the location to fully control the fire and carry out cooling operations.
The mayor of Epe, Tom Horn, said the news was very sad.“The barn fire in which about a thousand goats died is very distressing news,” he said in a written statement.
People working on the farm were reportedly too emotional to speak about the incident.

Barn fires in 2026
This is not the first barn fire of 2026 in the Netherlands, according to Animal Rights. On January 21, an unknown number of calves died in a barn fire in Markelo.
On February 22, around 15 cows died in a barn fire in Heelweg. And on March 4, nine pregnant sheep died in a barn fire in Harkstede.
The group says stronger fire prevention measures are needed to protect animals kept in large-scale farming systems.
