A 15-year-old boy died and three others were injured after a fire broke out at a chawl in South Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade early on Monday, officials said.

The fire was reported around 4:15 a.m. at a single-storey structure in Shivshakti Nagar on Captain Prakash Pethe Marg. According to civic and fire officials, the blaze quickly spread across a small section of the chawl before being brought under control.

Four residents sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to St. George’s Hospital. Doctors declared 15-year-old Yash Vitthal Khot dead on arrival, a civic official confirmed. The other injured were identified as Devendra Choudhary (30), Viraj Khot (13), and Sangram Kurne (25).

Choudhary has been admitted to the ICU, while the conditions of the others were reported to be stable, the official added.

Fire department personnel said the flames were largely confined to electrical wiring, installations, three electric vehicle batteries, and household items covering an area of about 10×10 feet on the first floor.

A fire engine was dispatched to the spot immediately after receiving the alert, and crews managed to extinguish the blaze within 20 minutes, by 4:35 a.m., officials said.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, though preliminary assessments suggest a possible electrical short circuit.
