Heading into the opening round of this year’s Augusta National Amateur Championship, American Asterisk Talley knew she needed to get off to a strong start at Champions Retreat Golf Club if she wanted to top her runner-up finish at last year’s ANWA. Mission accomplished.
Talley blitzed the second nine on Wednesday with three birdies and an eagle to shoot a six-under 66. That leaves her near the top of the leaderboard heading into Friday’s second round, but not at the very top.
Maria Jose Marin and Soomin Oh shot matching 65s on Day 1 to share the lead at seven under. Talley is T3 with Vanessa Borovilos and Andrea Revuelta.
If players want to make the cut and compete at Augusta National in Saturday’s final round, they need to finish within the top 30 in Round 2.
