Rajkumar Hirani is one of the most visionary filmmakers in Bollywood, who has given iconic films like 3 Idiots, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S and more Well, it’s been 15 years to its release and there still hasn’t been a better film than that. However, it looks like Rajkumar Hirani has decided to bring back the magic of the cult-classic film with a sequel. Interestingly, the original cast of Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor Khan are set to return.

The script of 3 Idiots 2 has been locked

Recently, a source close to the team of the film sat down for a conversation with Pinkvilla, during which they opened up about the cult-classic film. The source revealed that the script of the sequel has been locked with the original cast returning. The sequel will continue the legacy and magic of the first film. The source further explained that the 3 Idiots 2 will pick up 15 years after the climax of the first film. The source was quoted as saying:

“The script has been locked, and the team is extremely excited for it. They feel the magic of the first film has returned, and is as funny, as emotional, and as meaningful as the first part. The story will be a continuation, picking up nearly 15 years after the characters went their separate ways in the climax scene and reunite for a new adventure.”

3 Idiots 2 is expected to go on floors in 2026

During the same conversation with Pinkvilla, the source also mentioned that the director of the film, Rajkumar Hirani had already planned a sequel of the cult-classic film, but he was unable to give time for its script and screenplay. It is worth mentioning that Rajkumar Hirani was planning a biopic of Dadasaheb Phalke with Aamir Khan, however, it is on hold now. The source also revealed that the film is expected to begin shooting in the second half of 2026. In their words:

“He dedicated time to expand the 3 Idiots sequel into a full-fledged screenplay. Hirani always had a seed of an idea for 3 Idiots 2, but he wanted it to be perfect and something that would stand up to the legacy of the original.”

In early 2025, Aamir Khan revisited the days of 3 Idiots and shared that initially he was hesitant to sign the film as he was 40-years-old and he was supposed to play a 18-year-old in it. During the India Today Conclave, he shared that the reason he said ‘yes’ was for his love and trust towards Rajkumar Hirani.
