Prominent British-Indian peer Lord Karan Bilimoria has been appointed as the chair of the International Chamber of Commerce United Kingdom (ICCUK), set to take effect in the new year. This appointment comes at a crucial moment as the UK government has recommenced negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India, a development that Bilimoria strongly endorses.

Bilimoria, who is also the founder of Cobra Beer, highlighted the importance of establishing a completion deadline for the FTA, proposing June 30, 2025, as a target date. He stressed that an FTA could significantly enhance trade relations between India and the UK, unlocking vast economic potential and benefiting both nations through increased goods, investments, and services. He noted that India is currently the fastest-growing major economy and that Indian companies are already substantial investors in the UK.

In his new role at ICCUK, Bilimoria aims to strengthen international trade relations and foster engagement with key global economies. He expressed his commitment to positioning ICCUK as a leading voice for international business and trade, particularly in light of upcoming discussions at forums like the G7 and G20. Bilimoria succeeds Paul Drechsler CBE and is poised to leverage his leadership to drive meaningful outcomes for UK businesses on the global stage.

His vision includes enhancing collaboration with government bodies and industry stakeholders to navigate international trade priorities effectively. As he embarks on this new chapter, Bilimoria’s leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping trade policies that foster inclusivity and economic growth.
