Pooja Bedi Reveals She Was 5 When Her Parents, Kabir, Protima Were In Open Marriage, ‘Would I..’

Pooja Bedi’s parents, Kabir and late Protima, had experimented with open marriage back in the 1970s, but it did not last sadly. The pair had the hope that the arrangement of the same would help them co-parent and also explore other relations, thinking it would add stability to their lives. Although Kabir later confessed that the experiment did not last. Pooja recently shared how she was too young to understand her parents’ open relationship.

Kabir could not see Protima with other men, and in 1974, the pair had opted for a divorce. Pooja recently, in an interview with Siddharth Kannan, shared her views on her parents’ choice and her perspective on their open marriage. Pooja was asked about the arrangement her parents made with their relationship and revealed being non-judgmental. She also said she was just 5 years old and was too young to understand the same. In her words:

“Everyone is different. Some people say, ‘We really wanted to be in a marriage, then we decided we can’t do this.’ Some people say, ‘We wanted to be in an open relationship, then we decided we can’t do this.’ Some people say, ‘We got into an engagement, then we decided we can’t do this.’ My point is, what we define something as is just an experience we choose to go into — whether it’s an engagement, a friendship, or a marriage. Was I affected by all this? I was five years old, what would I know?”

Pooja Bedi shared that it was always her parents’ choices, their bodies, their job, their choices, and their entitlement towards things. It did not matter whether she comprehended the same or not. She said it was not her job to judge her parents, tell them what was right or wrong, or live life as per her terms or understanding of their relationship. Pooja shared how she was non-judgmental and said:

“I would say I’m not here to tell other people how to live their lives — I’m here to guide them on a path to happiness. So if something is bothering you, I’m here to help. But if everything is going great and you’re happy, who am I to try and shake that.”

Pooja went ahead in the interview and also spoke about the relationship she has with her dad, Kabir Bedi. She called him a ‘gentle giant’ and said she always looked up to her dad, not because he was a tall man but because he had been the most amazing person in her life. Pooja also shared how she grew up in a unique home, which was shaped by her parents’ work. Her mom, Protima, was a classical dancer and used to do long tours, while her dad’s international movie career exposed her to the glam and luxurious world. Pooja shared:

“He has never yelled at me his whole life, never raised his voice — not once. If he’s angry, upset, or concerned about something, he’ll say, ‘Darling, we need to talk,’ and you’re like, ‘Oops, what do we need to talk about?’ He’s a gentle giant, kind, evolved, well-spoken, extremely well-mannered, and well-travelled — emotionally, mentally, and physically.”
