The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) issued a statement on October 23rd warning that tensions between China and the Netherlands over semiconductor firms are having a serious impact on global automobile production.

The statement came after Nexperia, a semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in the Netherlands and a subsidiary of a major Chinese electronics company, notified Japanese parts suppliers that it might not be able to guarantee future chip deliveries.
Earlier this month, the Dutch government decided to place Nexperia under state supervision, citing deficiencies in corporate governance. The move provoked a strong reaction from the Chinese government, which in turn included Nexperia’s China-made products among those subject to export restrictions. The escalating standoff has raised concerns that disruptions in semiconductor supply chains could once again ripple through the global auto industry, which only recently began to recover from previous shortages.
