An MP has spoken of the “enormous shock and grief” following the death of a nine-year-old girl in an Oxfordshire village.

The girl was pronounced dead on Tuesday at a property in Middle Street, Islip.

A 49-year-old woman has been under police watch in hospital in a life-threatening condition following the death of the girl and reported assaults on two other children.

Calum Miller, MP for Bicester and Woodstock, said it was “clearly a tragic incident” and the community had been supporting one another after the news.

Police received reports of assaults on three children at the property at about 11:15 BST on Tuesday.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, although the cause of death remains unascertained, Thames Valley Police said.

The force said no-one else was being sought in connection with the incident.

A girl and a boy were treated in hospital and have since been discharged.

Miller said: “This is clearly a tragic incident and I’m sure that everybody who has heard about it is deeply shocked to hear the details.

“I know the members of the community are supporting one another and I, along with the local councillors, are ready and willing to support in any way we can as the community comes to terms with this news. “

A scene watch has concluded at the property, but extra officers have been in the village over the weekend.

Miller said: “My thoughts and prayers are with the little girl who has died, and with those members of her family who will be experiencing enormous shock and grief at this time.

“I really hope they will be given the privacy and space to grieve.”

Det Insp Amy Fox previously said: “This is an unimaginable tragedy, and we are doing everything we can to support those affected.”

She called it a “highly sensitive and complex investigation”.

Police have appealed for anyone with information or camera footage from Middle Street to come forward.
