WhatsApp just landed on Apple watch - But there’s a catch you should know

WhatsApp has introduced a native app for Apple Watch. The messenger, which previously supported notifications on Apple Watch, has launched a companion app with much richer functionality.

WhatsApp on Apple Watch: See Chats & Send Messages

WhatsApp users have been able to receive notifications on Apple Watch since 2019. However, those notifications could not be interacted with in any way beyond a simple “Tap to reply” option. WhatsApp has now released a companion app on Apple Watch that brings the ability to view full chats, use reactions and even send voice notes directly from the watch.

The Apple Watch app requires Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 10 or later. The iPhone must also have the latest version of WhatsApp installed. To install WhatsApp on Apple Watch, open the Watch app on the iPhone, then either tap on the App Store tab or search for WhatsApp under the “Available Apps” section. Tap to install and the app should then appear in the Apple Watch app, if you have automatic installs enabled.

WhatsApp on Apple Watch: Remaining Limitations

While the companion app brings a major step forward, there are a few remaining limitations.

The app is not a standalone app and still requires the iPhone to be paired and within Bluetooth range in order to function.

The initial version of the app appears to support the majority of available interactions and chat features. However, it is possible that some of the more advanced or rich media functions will still defer to the iPhone.

The app may not be available to all users globally just yet and could roll out in stages depending on region and supported devices.

WhatsApp on Apple Watch: Why this matters

This update is mostly for power WhatsApp users who are also Apple Watch users. With the new companion app, users can check their chats, send voice notes and react to messages without having to pull out their phone. This is very much in line with Apple’s own first-party apps on Apple Watch, like Mail or Phone. By comparison, Google’s Gmail and Hangouts apps also have watch support. The addition of a native WhatsApp app on Apple Watch will also bring its support for smartwatch interactions more in line with other popular messaging apps.

WhatsApp has not announced any specific plans to develop standalone watch apps for other platforms, but the development team at Meta would almost certainly be considering how to best bring the chat app to these growing smartwatch markets going forward.

WhatsApp app for Apple Watch brings key functionality to wrist

WhatsApp is not the first app to get native support for Apple Watch, but it’s one of the most popular. For those who use WhatsApp regularly, the new companion app for Apple Watch will allow users to interact with much more information on their wrist. The app currently has some remaining limitations, but those may be addressed in future updates.
