Former rugby union player Lewis Moody has opened up about how his family are coping with his Motor Neurone Disease (MND) diagnosis after revealing the devastating news last month. The 47-year-old announced just weeks ago that he had been diagnosed with MND – a life-shortening neurological disease that affects the nerves controlling movement.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast about how his family are dealing with the news, Lewis said that his sons Dylan, 17, and Ethan, 15, are still “trying to understand it all”.
“Just to step away from all that and have a bit of family time – especially with the boys,” he said. “They’re still young, they’re still trying to understand it all. Dylan is off in Qatar at the minute playing football so I’m hoping to sneak out there and watch him in the next couple of weeks as well but that precious family time is all important.”

When asked whether he was suffering with further symptoms, Lewis said: “Touch wood – at the minute, physically, no not really. I have a couple of small symptoms in the hand and the shoulder but the only real effect it has on you is in the back of your mind.
“It lingers. Trying to park that and just focus on everyday and getting the most amount of joy that you physically can out of every day, feeling you have a purpose and applying yourself.”
Lewis went on to speak about his son Dylan’s football career, with the teenager playing for the England Under-17s. “As a dad sometimes, it’s hard to show your pride, you get stuck behind this macho, male stuff but I’m overwhelmingly proud of him and everything he’s having to deal with at the minute,” Lewis said.
“Being able to still crack on and be out there, surrounded by his own supportive community. The football team over there and south where he plays have so supportive. We are incredibly lucky as a family and incredibly grateful.”
