An NHS trust and ward manager have been sentenced for health and safety failings over the death of Alice Figueiredo, 22 at an east London mental health unit in 2015.

The North-East London Foundation NHS Trust (NELFT), which runs Goodmayes Hospital, was fined £565,000, while Benjamin Aninakwa was given a six-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and 300 hours of unpaid community service.

Ms Figueiredo was being treated at the the facility in Ilford when she took her own life using bin bags from a shared toilet, having previously made many similar attempts.

NELFT and Aninakwa were convicted in June when an Old Bailey jury found they did not do enough to prevent Alice’s death.
