In pictures: Trains packed as tunnel opens
As excited passengers packed the first Metro Tunnel-bound trains on Sunday, our photographers were there to capture every moment.
Take a look back at the first day of travel in the photo gallery below as we prepare for train services running through the Metro Tunnel to recommence from 10am today.
Summer timetable from today to February 1
By Patrick Hatch
From today to February 1 – the so-called Summer Start – Metro Tunnel trains will only operate between West Footscray and Westall, in Clayton South, every 20 minutes from 10am to 3pm on weekdays.
That’s 15 trains a day in each direction.
On weekends, trains will run until 7pm and some will go all the way to East Pakenham or Sunbury. All public transport will be free on weekends statewide in December and January.
From February 1, Sunbury and Pakenham/Cranbourne trains will come out of the City Loop and operate exclusively through the Metro Tunnel.
The state government has not released the February timetable. It has promised a “turn up and go” service, with trains between West Footscray and Dandenong every three to four minutes in morning and afternoon peaks.
Trains will run at least every 10 minutes at other times between West Footscray and Dandenong, and less frequently at stations on those lines further away from the city.
Welcome to our live coverage
By Cassandra Morgan
Good morning, and welcome to our live coverage of the second day of Metro Tunnel services.
I’m Cassandra Morgan, and I’ll bring you all the updates as trains carrying passengers through the new cross-city rail tunnel face their first weekday test.
On Sunday, enthusiastic passengers packed the first trains to run through to the Metro Tunnel, from Sunbury and East Pakenham. It was standing-room only on the trains and many more people walked through the stations and underground passages to the City Loop to check out the biggest upgrade to the city’s rail network in 40 years.
There were teething issues at some of the new stations. Escalators at Parkville and State Library stations stopped working. At Anzac station, trains both undershot and overshot the platform, meaning automatic platform screen doors stayed closed.
Operators will be hoping it all goes smoothly today. Stay with us as we bring you the latest.
