As floodwaters continue to affect many areas in Sri Lanka, help is arriving from India. Sniffer dogs from India landed with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assist in rescue efforts.
The Indian Air Force brought in 80 NDRF personnel, trained sniffer dogs, and essential disaster-relief equipment. These dogs are specially trained to locate people trapped under debris or missing in flooded areas.
Their skills are critical in speeding up rescue operations and saving lives.
Rescuing animals from floods
Sri Lankan youth groups and animal welfare volunteers are focusing on animals that are often forgotten in emergencies.
In several flood-affected districts, many dogs and other animals have been left behind. Many dogs are seen on roofs as they try to flee to higher ground.
Volunteers are searching for them, feeding them, and making sure they receive care after days without food or shelter.
One youth-led group in the Anuradhapura District even visited a flood shelter where only one family had brought their dogs; the rest were left behind.
These volunteers went out into the flooded villages, sometimes walking long distances through water, to find and feed the animals.
