'Dies Irae' Ending Explained, What Happens To 'Rohan' In Climax, Will He Be Killed By Kani's Spirit?

Malayalam horror thriller, Dies Irae, starring Pranav Mohanlal, was the best treat this Halloween Season. For the unversed, the film was released theatrically on October 31, 2025. While the spooky season has passed, the eeriness of Dies Irae is still prevalent. On December 5, 2025, the film was digitally released on JioHotstar. Pranav has stepped in as the protagonist in Dies Irae, who is haunted by a spirit. While the thriller has started to spread horror on OTT, let’s have a look at the ending of the movie.

Plotline of the horror thriller, Dies Irae

The story of the horror thriller, Dies Irae, revolves around an Indo-American architect, ‘Rohan’ (played by Pranav Mohanlal). He is a spoiled brat and lives in his dad’s opulent mansion in Kerala. He leads a comfortable life with his don’t-care attitude. However, one day his life took a U-turn when he got to know that his ex-girlfriend, ‘Kani’ (played by Sushmita Bhat), died by suicide. He visited her house to offer condolences to her family. When he reached there, he randomly found a pink hairclip of ‘Kani’ and kept it as a keepsake.

But when ‘Rohan’ returned home, he started experiencing supernatural things. Initially, he was convinced that it might be ‘Kani’s’ spirit as she carried a wrath. ‘Rohan’ had a brief fling with ‘Kani’, and it was the former who broke up with the latter. And thus, according to ‘Rohan’, ‘Kani’ carried a wrath and wanted to take revenge on him. ‘Rohan’ reaches out to ‘Kani’s’ neighbour, ‘Madhusudanan Potti’ a.k.a ‘Madhu’ (played by Gibin Gopinath) for help.

Will ‘Rohan’ die in the climax of Dies Irae?

‘Rohan’s’ initial belief about the spirit got changed in the interval scene. After knowing that it was not ‘Kani’s’ spirit, ‘Rohan’ and ‘Madhu’ set off to investigate more about the man. During their investigation, they came to know that there had been a man who used to stalk ‘Kani’ and was madly in love with her. As time passed, ‘Rohan’ and ‘Madhu’ discovered that the man who stalked ‘Kani’ was ‘Philip’. When the duo started investigating ‘Philip’s’ whereabouts, they came to know that ‘Philip’ was none other than ‘Kani’s’ househelp, ‘Elsamma’s’ son, ‘Manu’.

Another twist comes to the forefront when ‘Rohan’ discovers the decaying body of ‘Philip’, who had died of cancer. However, his spirit still lingers everywhere. During this, it was made clear that as ‘Philip’ a.k.a ‘Manu’ was obsessed with ‘Kani’ and ‘Rohan’ had her pink hairclip, the spirit of the former was disturbing the latter. Meanwhile, ‘Madhu’ told ‘Rohan’ that the only way to free the spirit is to remove ‘Kani’s’ anklet, which is tied to the corpse’s leg. Soon, ‘Elsamma’ returns to the scene, and a fierce fight breaks out between her and ‘Rohan’.

The fight ends when ‘Rohan’ knocks out ‘Elsamma’. However, when ‘Rohan’ failed to remove the anklet from the corpse’s leg, he chopped it and dumped it into the fire. This freed the spirit, but the house was engulfed by fire. But the trio leaves the spot unharmed. In the final scene, when ‘Rohan’ is packing his bags to return US and join his family, he experiences a similar eerie incident. The movie ends with a subtle hint that ‘Kani’s’ spirit might have returned to seek revenge.

Is the title of the film, Dies Irae, appropriate?

Dies Irae is a Latin term that means ‘The Day of Wrath’ in English. So, if we look at the English term, ‘The Day of Wrath’, it is clearly understandable that the consequences that ‘Rohan’ had to face were all because of ‘Kani’s’ wrath, as he once dumped her. And if we analyse it from ‘Philip’s’ angle, then also we can say that the title of the film is appropriate.
