Delhi air quality update: Toxic air continued to choke Delhiites on Saturday as air quality in the national capital continued to remain in the ‘very poor’ category, with no relief expected over the coming days.
Delhi air quality remains ‘very poor’
According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, Delhi’s 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 330 on Saturday, with 31 of the city’s 40 operational monitoring stations logging an AQI in the ‘very poor’ bracket. Mundka recorded the worst AQI in the city at 387, as a thick cover of smog engulfed the capital, with Delhiites waking up to another choking morning as AQI stood at 335 at 9 am.
An AQI between 0 and 50 is ‘good’, 51 to 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 ‘poor’, 301 to 400 ‘very poor’ and 401 to 500 ‘severe’, as per CPCB standards.
According to the Decision Support System for Delhi’s air quality management, vehicular emissions within remained the highest local contributor to the city’s pollution at 14.8 percent, followed by industries in Delhi and surrounding areas at 7.3 percent, residential sources at 3.6 percent and construction at 2 percent.
Among neighbouring NCR districts, Jhajjar contributed 13.9 per cent, while Rohtak accounted for 5.2 per cent, the DSS data showed.
Notably, Delhi air quality has swung sharply through the week, with the city logging an AQI of 279 on Sunday, 304 on Monday, rose to 372 on Tuesday, and stood at 342 on Wednesday. It remained in the ‘very poor’ category at 304 on Thursday and 327 on Friday, according to CPCB data.
Cold wave continues in Delhi
Meanwhile, on the weather front, Delhi’s maximum temperature settled at 24.6 degrees Celsius, 0.7 notches below normal, while the minimum was 6.8 degrees Celsius, 2.7 notches below normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
As per IMD, evening relative humidity stood at 56 per cent, while morning humidity climbed to 95 per cent. The apex weather agency has forecast shallow fog for Sunday morning, with minimum temperature expected to rise to 9 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperature is likely to settle at around 24 degrees Celsius.
