‘Dhurandhar’, Major Mohit Sharma’s Parents Fought Legal Battle With His Widow, ‘Ma Baap Ka Audha..’

Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar is winning all hearts and breaking box office records; amidst it, one name that has been in the headlines is that of Major Mohit Sharma. It all started after his family approached the Delhi High Court, claiming that the film seemed to be based on his life and had been made without the family’s consent.

While the dispute was soon resolved by the High Court, which gave a clean chit and explained that it was not made on their son, Major Mohit Sharma. But the parents are still fighting one battle, which is with their son’s widow, Major Reshma Sareen, and her family. Also, the rule of Next Of Kin, which automatically gives the right to the martyred soldier’s widow.

Major Mohit Sharma’s parents claimed they were derecognised as the law gave full rights to the widow

As per the 2010 The Indian Express report, the parents of Major Mohit Sharma claimed that the law gave full rights only to the widow and derecognises parents’ efforts. They demanded a chance in the law and claimed that parents should also be given the legitimate next of kin. 

The parents also claimed that they were deprived of basic rights, such as being invited to receive their son’s Ashok Chakra. They were not even informed about the ceremony. The mother of Major Mohti Sharma went on record and said that they were given the passes just a day before the Republic Day. 

The family also claimed that they were deprived of their martyred son’s clothes and shoes that he wore on duty. They were denied the right to take photographs at his passing-out parade. They alleged that it was due to their daughter-in-law, who hails from an Army background. 

Mohit Sharma’s widow’s family denied the claims and stated that the in-laws treated her badly

The same report shared the widow, Major Reshma Sareen’s father, Retired Colonel Moohan Lal Sareen’s side. He denied that they did any ill-treatment to the late Major’s parents. According to him, his daughter, Reshma, was not even allowed to take Mohit’s photographs from his parents’ home, and she was badly treated as complaints were filed against her. 

Major Reshma’s father also claimed that after her husband’s martyrdom, his daughter had to take a month’s leave, and she had to seek psychiatric help to overcome the stress of dealing with her in-laws. It was reported that multiple legal cases were filed between the two families in the Supreme Court. 

Major Mohit Sharma’s parents’ point of view

Major Mohit Sharma’s parents made it clear that they are not after their son’s money. They just want the honour of being recognised as their son considered them the pillar, and it was due to them and their efforts that he was a part of the army. They just want the Army to amend the law so that parents are acknowledged as next-of-kin and are not sidelined. 

Major Mohit Sharma’s mother is still hurt over not getting recognition 

In a 2025 interview, martyred soldier Mohit Sharma’s mother expressed hurt over the Next of Kin rule. She stated that parents are the ones who raise the child, and the mother, with whom she had an even stronger relationship, is deprived of all the benefits and recognition. She was quoted as saying:

“Parents ko bhi usi din maar diya jaaye jis din unka beta shaheed hota hai, yeh koi matlab nahi, humare pass na koi medical ki facility mili hai government se jab ki mera beta Ashok Veer Chakra hai. Itna loving child tha matlab ek minute bhi akela nahi chorta tha. Mai ghar par hi rahe jati thi, aa jata tha, mummy chalo. Nai Next Of Kin kya hai. Bhai parents ka audha kaha par hai. Jo parents 26-27 saal bache ko paalte hai aur maa toh 9 mahine aur paalti hai. Jo rights hai vo mother ko diye jaye. Agar wife ka likha hai toh maa baap ka kyo nahi kisi ek ka toh rakho.”
