The prime suspect in the shooting incident, Faisal Karim, apparently foresaw what would happen.
The death of prominent July Uprising leader Sharif Osman Hadi has sparked mass violence and unrest across several cities, including Dhaka, as well as other major cities of Bangladesh. Last week, Hadi was shot multiple times while attending an event in Dhaka. After being treated there, he was flown to Singapore in critical condition where he died Thursday.
Hadi, a key figure associated with last year’s July Uprising and spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, was shot at close range on December 12 while travelling in a rickshaw in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area. According to bdnews24, citing police, two assailants arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire and fled. Critically injured, Hadi was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, later shifted to Evercare Hospital, and ultimately flown to Singapore by air ambulance on December 15 for advanced treatment. Later, he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the announcement of Hadi’s passing, protesters took to the streets, creating riots and looting. Subsequently, it has been discovered that Faisal Karim, the perpetrator of the shooting, had told his girlfriend Maria about an alleged plan to “burn the country” just before the shooting. Maria has provided this information to law enforcement officials.
The prime suspect in the shooting incident, Faisal Karim, apparently foresaw what would happen. After the shooting incident, it was revealed that the outcome of the events of the shooting was almost identical to what Faisal had said would happen before the incident occurred. The night before the attack, at a resort outside Dhaka, Faisal had reportedly stated to his girlfriend that something was going to occur that would send “shockwaves throughout all of Bangladesh,” according to media reports.
Hadi, one of the leaders who had taken part in the student-led protests last year – termed as July Uprising – and a candidate for the scheduled February 12 general elections, died while undergoing treatment at a Singapore hospital six days after he was shot by unidentified men. Body of Hadi, who was the spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at around 6 pm on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, amid tight security and widespread public mourning, state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) said quoting Biman General Manager (Public Relations) Boshra Islam. Members of the Bangladesh Army, Armed Forces Battalion (AFB) and police were deployed in large numbers to maintain security when Hadi’s body was taken out of the airport, it added.
The night before the attack, at a resort outside of Dhaka, Faisal Karim allegedly told Maria that he was going to “shake all of Bangladesh.” According to an India Today report, Faisal had warned his girlfriend that he would do something that would cause chaos throughout the entire country. His prediction came true, as unrest spread throughout the nation as soon as word spread of Hadi’s death in Singapore.
Faisal Karim, with two other accomplices, allegedly shot Hadi during daylight hours in Dhaka, Bangladesh. One bullet hit Hadi’s ear and exited from the other side, as reported by IndiaToday. He was rushed to a hospital, but his condition did not improve. Under the supervision of the Mohammad Yunus administration, Hadi was airlifted to Singapore for treatment, where he died on Thursday.
Hadi’s death has created unrest throughout Bangladesh, particularly in Dhaka. The timing of this unrest coincides with an already tumultuous period for the country, leading up to general elections in less than three months, in February 2026.
Sharif Usman Hadi was widely known as a radical anti-India leader and the spokesperson of the Anti-Sheikh Hasina Inqilab Mancha.
As per Bangladeshi investigators, there are crucial clues from the night before the attack. According to law enforcement investigators examining this case, prior to the first gunshot being fired, Faisal had given an indication of a significant event to his girlfriend. Faisal was reportedly residing at a resort located in Savar on the outskirts of Dhaka and had told Maria Akhtar Lima (his girlfriend) that something dramatic would happen the following day, as reported by IndiaToday.
Jamuna Television in Dhaka has reported that Faisal stated to Maria that the event was going to be something that would “shake the entire country.” Faisal provided Maria with a video of Hadi, which led authorities to conclude that the attack on Hadi was planned and coordinated with the help of several individuals. “Something will happen tomorrow (on Friday), that the whole country will tremble, the newspaper Daily Jugantor quoted Faisal as saying.
This statement came to light during questioning of the arrested individuals, including Maria. The statement also came from other investigators connected to the case at hand. According to authorities, just by that statement, they claim that it indicates premeditated planning and knowledge of this incident. They go on to say that this proved the fact that this attack against Hadi was not just a spur-of-the-moment reaction but was previously arranged and organized and involved multiple individuals.
